Cuff:
Cast on 38 sts. Divide stitches between 4 needles. Join for working in a round, being careful not to twist stitches. Round 1: purl Round 2: knit Continue following Lace chart 1, rounds 1 - 4. One pattern repeat is 19 sts, so there are two repeats per round. Work 5 vertical repeats of lace pattern or more for desired length of a cuff.
Thumb gusset:
Work following Lace chart 2. Knit two horizontal repeats of lace pattern and increase for a thumb gusset at the end of every other round.
Thumb:
After 16 rounds of Lace chart 2, leave first 38 sts on hold on needles to be worked later for upper hand and divide 15 thumb sts between 3 dpns. Work in stockinette stitch until half of your thumb nail is covered (about 14 - 16 rounds). Decrease one stitch at the end of every needle by knitting 2 sts together till 3 sts remain. Cut yarn, pull it through those 3 sts and weave in yarn end.
Upper hand:
Continue following Lace chart 1. Knit two horizontal repeats of the lace pattern and pick up 3 sts from the gap under the thumb. Purl those picked sts and decrease them away (p2tog) on the next three rounds, one stitch per round. Repeat the lace pattern till the mitten hand measures to the top of your fingers. There are no need for mitten top shapings, because the lace pattern is wavy and shapes the top of the mitten without decreasings. Close the top of the mitten using a three needle cast off. Place stitches on two safety pins and turn mitten inside out. Now slip stitches onto two needles (one pattern repeat per needle) and cast off using a three needle cast off. Weave in yarn ends and close holes at the thumb gusset if necessary.
