Bobby's Mitts

Fingerless gloves with a fully-fashioned thumb gusset and the tailored touch of a seeded rib motif will make a wonderful gift for the gamer, texter, or hipster on your gift list - or for yourself! The finished gloves will measure approximately 8 inches in circumference, to fit an average adult hand. Yarn: The model pictured was knitted with Valley Yarns Amherst 100% aran weight merino wool, in the Balsam colorway. The pair used about 112 balls (approximately 160 yards) of yarn. Gauge: 5 sts per inch in the round in stockinette stitch. Check your gauge to be sure that your mitts will fit!
Notions:
Four double-pointed needles (or whatever needles you like for knitting a small circumference in the round). For the model, I used a U.S. size 5. 3 stitch markers Tapestry needle
Abbreviations:
K = knit P = purl M1R = make one right. Pick up the bar between the needles from the back to the front and knit it; one stitch increased. M1L = make one left. Pick up the bar between the needles from the front to the back and knit it through the back loop; one stitch increased.
Cuff:
Cast on 40 sts and divide among three double-pointed needles. Join in the round, being careful not to twist, and place a marker at the beginning of the round. Work K1, P1 rib for 10 rows. K 3 rows. P one row. K 3 rows. Work 10 rows in seeded rib pattern: Row 1 and all odd rows: P1, K3; repeat to end. Row 2 and all even rows: K1, P1, K2; repeat to end. Thumb setup row: K1, place marker, K1, place marker, K to end.
Thumb gusset:
Row 1: K1, slip marker, M1R, K to marker, M1L, slip marker, K to end. Row 2: K. Row 3: K. Repeat rows 1-3 five more times; the thumb gusset (between the markers) will contain 11 sts.
Upper hand:
First row: K1, M1R, slip 11 thumb sts onto waste yarn, K to end (closing the gap over the thumb sts). You will still have 40 sts (not counting the 11 sts on the waste yarn). P 1 row. K 3 rows. Work 10 rows in seeded rib pattern (see above). Bind off in purl.
Thumb:
Place 11 held stitches back onto two needles. Join yarn at inside edge of thumb. Knit across first two needles. With third needle, pick up and knit 6 stitches at the edge of the hand. You now have a total of 17 thumb sts. Work these 17 sts in the round for 6 more rows. Bind off loosely.
Finishing:
Weave in ends and steam-block. Because the stitch pattern is symmetrical, right and left mitts are identical. Work the second mitt exactly the same as the first mitt. Enjoy!
