Clapo-Ktus Hybrid Shawl Pattern: A Versatile Stash-Down Project for Knitters of All Levels

Clapo-Ktus

By Loredana Gianferri Aka lorelostintheusa An hybrid between clapotis and baktus scarf, this shawl let you use the exact amount of yarn you have. It's perfect to stash-down all of those single skeins of socks yarn sitting somewhere in your house! As many Baktus knitters proved so far, it works with any kind of yarn. Choose needles according to the yarn you have selected.

I'm going to write the directions according to the shawl I have knitted Finished Measurements: 215 cm / 86 inches across top edge, 70 cm / 28 inches from center back to bottom point, blocked. The size is easily modified using a different yarn. Yarn: Handmaiden Fine Yarn Sea Silk, Fingering / 4 ply 70% Silk, 30% Tencel 437 yards, 100 gr color aegean Needle: US 6 - 4.0 mm or size to obtain gauge. Gauge: 15 stitches = 4" (10cm) Additional Materials: Tapestry needle Legend: k knit p purl yo yarn over k2tog knit two together sl slip ktbl knit through back of the loop Please weight the yarn before casting on. Keep weighing the yarn here and there, when you have used almost 50% of it, the decreasing part will start. The pattern of the scarf builds 3- 1 ribbing fabric, 3 knitted / 1 purled. The purled stitches are the ones that will be dropped, creating the ladder/lacy look!

How to Knit:

Cast On 6 sts Row 1: sl1 k5 Row 2 and all even rows: Sl1, work all the stitches as presented, or knit the knits and purl the purls. Row 3: [sl1 k1 ktbl], yo, k3 Row 5: [sl1 k1 ktbl], p, yo, k3 Row 7: [sl1 k1 ktbl], p, ktbl, yo, k3 Row 9: [sl1 k1 ktbl], p, ktbl, k1, yo, k3 Row 11: [sl1 k1 ktbl], p, [ktbl, k1, ktbl], yo, k3 Rows 13, and all the odd rows: continue increasing one st (yo) before the 3 remaining sts at the end of the row. You'll work the increased sts according the 3/1 ribbing pattern as we have done through the row 11.

Start Decreasing:

Row1: work as you were knitting an odd row , until you have 4 sts left, k2tog, k2. If the first of the 4 sts left is a PURL you don't have to k2tog. You'll drop it and then you'll knit the 3 sts left. The dropped st will unravel creating a ladder/lacy effect, here it's the Clapotis part. Continue until you have 6 sts left, at this point you'll Bind Off the 6 sts. Break yarn and draw through loop of last st. Finish unravelling any drop-stitch ladders that remain unravelled. Finishing: Weave in all ends. Soak the shawl in a water bath with some wool soap or shampoo. Rinse. Wrap the shawl in a towel to squeeze out the excess water. Pin in place and block to give it a tringular shape. I like to live it there for at least 24 hours.
