Gardiner Yarn Works clue #2...
See Clue #1 for materials and abbreviations. Before starting clue, select which heel you'd like to use for your sock. Option #1: The Hybrid Heel is a gusseted heel with a slip-stitch heel flap and is your best choice if you have a high instep or otherwise worry about fitting the sock over your heel. The gusset will require slightly more yarn (both MC and CC2) and is worked from the charts on p.8. Be warned - the gusset will not look exactly like the chart, so be ready for a bit of a surprise as you're knitting! Option #2: The Short Row Heel is my special variation on the classic toe-up heel. This heel will allow you to continue the main color chart without interrupting it with the gusset. Option #3: The Afterthought Heel is another classic toe-up heel. The heel stitches are held on waste yarn while the rest of the sock is completed, and then the sock heel is knitted like a top-down sock toe.

Join CC2 and work begin working from Color Chart #2 on next page in the following order. Note: When sock from tip of toe to ndls measures either 3.5" (for hybrid heel) or $Z^{\ast}$ (for short row or afterthought heel) less than desired finished length, skip down to heel instructions, work heel (do not break either yarn), then cont with color pattern. If possible, place the short row or afterthought heel immediately after Row 17 of color pattern. Start the hybrid heel NO LATER than Row 16 of the color pattern. 1. Work Setup Rnd 0. Break CC1 2. Work Rnds 1-25. 3. Work Rnds 2-10.

Afterthought Heel Hold Stitches for Heel
Work across instep sts in pattern. With waste yarn, knit across heel sts. Drop waste yarn and go back to start of heel. Knit across heel sts in pattern with working yarn(s). Cont with Leg. Once Leg is finished, return here to complete heel as follows. You can do this either at the completion of Clue 2 or after finishing the entire sock. Note: If breaking yarn after Clue 2, leave enough extra to complete 2 more rnds at the start of Clue3.
Insert Afterthought Heel
Carefully pick up the sts held by the waste yarn, placing the back-of-leg sts on one ndl and the bottom-of-foot sts on another. There will be an extra st on the top (back-of-leg) ndl, so pick up a st in the corner of the heel with the other ndl so that there are 38 (42) sts on each ndl. If working on dpns, divide each set of sts over two dpns. Join CC2 at corner of heel and begin working in the rnd on these 76 (84) sts.
Rnd 1: Knit.
