Linen Stitch Coaster, Napkin, Hand Towel and Placemat Pattern
Size 8 needles 100% cotton yarn For a 4-4 12 inch coaster, cast on 26 and knit until the coaster is square. For a 5 inch square, I cast on 30 stitches.

For a 6 inch cloth napkin, cast on 38 and knit until the napkin is square. For a hand towel(or place mat), cast on 70 stitches, knit until desired length. (I have a note on one of my patterns that I had 170 rows; another was 180. I believe they are 11 x 20 inches). It's fun to change colors when using linen stitch. There are “remnants"" of the color you are switching from before the color you are switching to becomes solid. Variegated (ombre) yarns look nice in linen stitch.
Linen Stitch Directions
If you search online, you will see different stitches called the linen stitch. My best explanation of this stitch is that it is knitting and weaving at the same time. This is how I do the linen stitch: 1. Cast on an even number of stitches. 2. Slip the first stitch (as if to knit), a. then knit one stitch, b. put yarn in front, c. slip one stitch, d. put yarn in back Continue steps a-d until you're done with the row. The last stitch should be a knit (My "jingle” then after the first slip is: knit, yarn in front, slip, yarn in back, knit, yarn in front, slip, etc.) 3. On the “wrong side", slip one (as if to purl) a. purl one stitch, b. put yarn in back, c. slip one stitch, d. put yarn in front Continue steps a-d until you're done with the row. The last stitch should be a purl. 4. I always cast off when the knit side (the right side) is facing me and I cast off like usual (I knit the slipped stitches and the knit stitches).
