A very easy and quick to knit cowl worked in the round in two lengths and two different ridge variations. A version using purl and linen stitch only is also included, making it a very versatile pattern and a cosy accessory for autumn and winter as well as spring.

Finished measurements

Version 1: about 8" /20 cm deep x 24" / 61 cm around Version 2: about 9.5" / 24 cm x 53" / 135 cm.

Materials

Bulky weight yarn, approximately 65 yd / 60 m - 125 yd / 115 m for the short version; 263 yd / 241 m - 328 yd / 300 m for the long version. Shown in The Knitting Goddess Chunky BFL Roving_ 164 yds /150 m 100 g. Colour: (short version) Indian Ocean, 1 skein; (long version) Natural Beauty, 2 skeins; (linen & purl only version) Semi Solid Charcoal, 2 skeins. Several strands of thinner yarn could used together - a great way to play with stash oddments. Needles: 7.0 mm / US # 10.5, 24" / 60cm (40" / 100cm) circular. Needle size is a recommendation only & no gauge given as I leave it to knitter's choice. If a different needle size is used it may affect the finished size.

Directions

VERSION 1 (short) (instructions for purl & linen stitch only version in italic

CO 75 sts (I used the long tail method) & join to knit in round, taking care not to twist the sts, pm at start of round. Work 7 rounds linen stitch. (note: the start of rounds will alternate between sllwyif and k1.) ·2 rounds purl. ·4 rounds linen st. Centre section (28 rounds): [4 rounds knit, 2 rounds purl]; repeat 3 more times. For the purl & linen st only version, instead of above: [4 rounds linen st, 2 rounds purl]; rpt as above. · 4 rounds knit. For the purl & linen st only version, instead of above: 4 rounds linen st (instead of knit). (There will be 4 ridges made in this centre section for both versions.) 4 rounds linen st, 2 rounds purl, 7 rounds linen st. BO purlwise.

VERSION 2 (long) (instructions for purl & linen stitch only version in italics).

· CO 165 sts using long tail method and join to work in round, taking care not to twist the sts, pm at start of round. Work 7 rounds linen stitch. (note: the start of rounds will alternate between sllwyif and k1.) · 2 rounds purl. ·4 rounds linen st. Centre section (36 rounds): · [4 rounds knit, 2 rounds purl]; repeat once more for two ridges. For the purl & linen st only version, instead of above: [4 rounds linen st, 2 rounds purl]; rpt as above. 4 rounds knit, 4 rounds purl, 4 rounds knit - making one larger ridge. For the purl & linen st only version, instead of above: work 4 rounds linen st, 4 rounds purl, 4 rounds linen st instead of above. [2 rounds purl, 4 rounds knit]; repeat once more for two ridges. For the purl & linen st only version, instead of above: [2 rounds purl, 4 rounds linen st]; rpt as above. (There'll be a total of 4 narrow ridges and one larger one in the middle in this centre section for bothversions.) · 4 rounds linen st., 2 rounds purl, 7 rounds linen st. BO purlwise. I didn't block either version as I loved the squishy texture as it was.
