INFORMATION

Finished size: This shawl can be knit in either of two sizes. The large shawl, using 1470 yards of yarn, has a radius of about 40" (102 cm). The smaller shawl, using 735 yards, has a radius of about 28" (71 cm). Needles used: Circular Us9 (5.5 mm) or size needed to produce desired fabric. Gauge is not important. The shawl is knit flat, but is wide at the bottom, so a circular needle with a long cord is needed. For the large shawl, a 60" cord is desirable. Forthe smaller shawl, a 40" cord is desirable. The shawl can be started on a shorter cord (or on straight needles), switching up as the circumference gets larger. Yarn used: The pattern was designed for seven balls (210 yards each) of Berroco Comfort (worsted weight), each a different color, inspired by the beautiful bright colors of the Grand Prismatic Spring at Yellowstone National Park. The colors are listed below. For the large shawl, all the balls are used completely, for a total of 1470 yards. For the smaller shawl, use half as much yarn in each color, for a total of 735 yards. Stitches used: Garter stitch, stockinette stitch (st st), yarnover (yo), knit two together (k2tog), and slip slip knit (ssk); also, for yoke only: pick up and knit, knit front back (kfb), and make one (m1) or other preferred increase. Colors used: The colors, all found in the Grand Prismatic Spring, are shades of blue, yellow, orange, and brown. Color changes can be made at the beginning of any row and do not need to be made in a consistent place in a repeat. The colors, in order, are listed below. For the larger shawl, use the entire ball of yarn before switching to the next color; except that, because there are two stripes each of Kidz Orange (9731) and Primary Yellow (9732), use half a ball of yarn (by weight) for each stripe of Kidz Orange and Primary Yellow, as shown below. For the smaller shawl, use one fourth of a ball by weight for each of Kidz Orange and Primary Yellow, and use one half of a ballby weight for each of the other colors. Primary Blue (9736) - all (large shawl) or half (smaller shawl) Dutch Teal (9725) - all (large) or half (smaller) Primary Yellow (9732) - half (large) or quarter (smaller) Kidz Orange (9731) - half (large) or quarter (smaller) Iron Oxide [rust](9746) - all (large) or half (smaller) Kidz Orange (9731) - half (large) or quarter (smaller) Primary Yellow (9732) - half (large) or quarter (smaller) Filbert [tan](9745) - all (large) or half (smaller) Coffeeberry Heather [brown](9786) - all (large) or half (smaller)

SHAWL PATTERN

Garter tab cast on

Cast on 3 stitches and knit 6 rows

Yoke

This semi-circular shawl starts at the center and is worked outward. The middle is a bull's-eye, the garter tab. Because yarn is flexible, the bull's-eye can be rectangular. Pick up along two sides of the garter tab (see line-by-line instructions below) to get the approximation of a semi-circle. (At the beginning, it will just look like a clump of stitches on the needle.) The approximation magically turns into a true semi-circle as you knit along. 1. Turn 90 degrees; pick up and knit 3 stitches along side of garter tab; turn 90 degrees; pick up and knit 3 stitches from cast on row (9) [right side] 2. k3, p3, k3 [wrong side] 3. k3, yo, kfb, yo, k1, yo, kfb, yo, k3 (15) 4-8. St st 5 rows beginning with purl row, starting and ending each row k3 for garter stitch border 9. k3, (yo, k1) 9 times, yo, k3 (25) 10-14. St st 5 rows beginning with purl row, starting and ending each row k3 15. k3, (yo, k1) 19 times, yo, k3 (45) 16-20. St st 5 rows beginning with purl row, starting and ending each row k3 21. k5, (yo, k1) 35 times, yo, k5 (81) 22. k3, purl to last 3 sts, k3 23. k4, m1, knit to end (82) 24-26. St st 3 rows beginning with purl row, starting and ending each row k3

Begin Feather and Fan pattern

For entire shawl, each row (pattern or plain) begins and ends k3 (garter stitch border). Each pattern row contains four repeats of the pattern for that row. So each pattern row starts k3, has 4 pattern repeats, and ends k3. There are three pattern rows: A, B, and C. Each pattern row is followed by five rows of stockinette stitch, starting with a purl row on the wrong side. (Don't forget the garter stitch border on each stockinette row, as well as each pattern row.) Each iteration of the Feather and Fan pattern has 18 rows: pattern row A, five rows st st, pattern row B,five rows st st, pattern row C, five rows st st. In each iteration of a given complete pattern row (A, B, or C) the numbers in ITALiCS are increased by 2; and the number in BoLD is increased by 4. Pattern A [in each row, pattern repeats four times; each row begins and ends with garter stitch border] (ssk) 2 times, k2, (yo, k1) 8 times, k1, (k2tog) 2 times Pattern B [in each row, pattern repeats four times; each row begins and ends with garter stitch border] (ssk) 3 times, k1, (yo, k1) 10 times, (k2tog) 3 times Pattern C [in each row, pattern repeats four times; each row begins and ends with garter stitch border] (ssk) 4 times, (yo, k1) 11 times, yo, (k2tog) 4 times For your convenience, the next 54 rows are written out (through row 80). 27. k3, \*(ssk) 2 times, k2, (yo, k1) 8 times, k1, (k2tog) 2 times\*, repeat pattern A (between asterisks) 3 more times, end k3 (23 sts per repeat, 98 total) jeginning with purl row but starting and ending each row k3 for garter stitch border 33. k3, \*(ssk) 3 times, k1, (yo, k1) 10 times, (k2tog) 3 times\*, repeat pattern B (between asterisks) 3 more times, end k3 (27 sts per repeat, 114 total) 34-38. St st 5 rows beginning with purl row but starting and ending each row k3 for garter stitch border 39. k3, \*(ssk) 4 times, (yo, k1) 11 times, yo, (k2tog) 4 times\*, repeat pattern C (between asterisks) 3 more times, end k3 (31 sts per repeat, 130 total) 40-44. St st 5 rows beginning with purl row but starting and ending each row k3 for garter stitch border 75. k3, \*(ssk) 8 times, (yo, k1) 19 times, yo, (k2tog) 8 times\*, repeat pattern C (between asterisks) 3 more times, end k3 (55 sts per repeat, 226 total) )eginning with purl row but starting and ending each row k3 for garter stitch border established until desired length. See Appendix (page 6) for the next 15 pattern row

Bind off

Bind off over two rows as follows. The first row doubles the number of stitches (plus one) because for a wide shawl a very stretchy bindoff is desirable. First bind-off row: (yo, k1) to end, yo Second bind-off row: Bind off in knit loosely (or using a larger size needle)
