Notes:

I made my cushion 14-inches by using DK yarn and size 4 (3.5mm needles) so that my gauge was 5.75 stitches per inch. If you go down to fingering weight yarn and achieve gauge of 8.25 (probably with a size 2 needle, though I haven't tried it), you can make a 10-inch pillow. If you look closely, you can see in my photo that one of my lowercase “a's is not right. It's fixed in the chart. The chart shows only the front of the cushion. For the back, I continued the peeries (small lines of design), where there were peeries on the front. Where there was lettering on the front and the yarn needed to be carried across the back, I worked more of the same peeries in the single color that was being carried across. Feel free to use other traditional designs, make up your own, or cut your contrast yarn at the end of each row at the front. (Though I do not envy you sewing in all the ends if you choose to cut at the end of the front of each row.) You could also knit the front and back the same.

To make a 14-inch cushion you will need:

Using scrap yarn provisionally cast on 186 stitches. Begin by knitting in background color. Join in round at end of first round. This is the first line of the chart. Continue knitting, following the chart for the front, and doing whatever you have decided to do for the back. When finished knitting the chart, graft the top closed using kitchener stitch. Block. When dry, insert pillow form. Remove provisional cast on stitches and place loose stitches on needles. Graft opening with kitchener stitch. Enjoy your sassy cushion! Copyright 2015 by Sarah Long.
