leg: start working the leg chart. repeat each chart line 9 times to complete one round on your needles. work rounds 1-45 of pattern chart once, then work rounds 24-45 once more (cuff plus leg are then about 6 inches /15 cm long. if you prefer a longer leg, just work rounds 24-45 a third time).
set-up for heel flap:
put the next 36sts on hold (they will be worked later for instep). the heel flap is worked over the 36 sts you have still on your needles. turn your work. work 1 row like this: WS: sl yf, [k4, k2tog, k2] 4 times, k2, sl yf, turn
heel flap:
RS: kl, [p2, k2, pl, k2] 4times, p2, kl, turn WS: sl yf, [k2, sl2 yf, kl, sl2 yf] 4 times, k2, sl yf, turn work these two rows 15 more times (i.e. 32 rows all together), then work the RS row once more.

instep chart:

gusset setup:
pick up and knit 18 sts along side of heel flap, pick up one more st between flap and instep and knit this one. continue by knitting all the 36 held instep sts in instep pattern, then pick up 1 st between instep and heel flap and knit it, pick up 18 more sts along side of heel flap and knit them. knit the 39 other sole sts. this is the new beginning of the round. (now you have 58 sole sts and 36 instep sts.)
gusset decrease:
round 1: instep: work in instep pattern as established sole: ssk, knit to 2 sts before instep, k2tog round 2: instep: work in instep pattern as established sole: k across all sts work these 2 rounds 12 times (24 rounds total), decreasing 2 sts every other round. now there are 36 instep sts and 34 sole sts.
foot:
continue instep as established while always knitting the 34 sole sts. work until foot is approx 2 inches shorter than desired length, end after one of the following rounds: 5, 10l, 16 or 21.
toe set-up:
k1, ssk, k to 3 sts before end of instep, k2tog, k1, knit across all sole sts. now you have 34 instep sts and 34 sole sts
toe:
round 1 (decrease round): [k1, ssk, k to 3 sts before end of instep, k2tog, k1], [k1, ssk, k to 3 sts before end of sole, k2tog, k1] round 2 (plain round) k all sts repeat these 2 rounds until you have 32 sts left, then always work round 1 until there are 16 sts left on your needles.
finishing:
leaving a tail of at least 8 inches, break yarn and close the toe using Kitchener stitch. weave in the ends. then knit a second sock and enjoy!

about this pattern:
"Tony" is the male protagonist of Leonard Bernstein's Broadway hit "West Side Story", that tells a modern version of Shakespeare's tragic love story Romeo and Juliet. Set in the Upper West Side of New York in the 1950s, the musical explores the rivalry between two teenage street gangs: the Puerto Rican Sharks and the Jets, a white working-class group. Tony, one of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of the leader of the Sharks and the drama unfolds as they try to share their forbidden love amidst a turf war fought between the two rival groups. In the staggered knit/purl pattern of these socks zigzagging from side to side you can see Tony finding himself torn between his love and his loyalty. The pattern of the socks are just low-key enough to be wearable for all the men in your life, and just interesting enough to save the knitter from being bored to tears while making them.
