1. large blunt needle for weaving in ends, 2. approx 40g of size 6 seed beads (4mm or 6/0 may also be used to describe the size of the bead) in a matching or contrast colour to your yarn - clear silver lined beads were used here which would suit nearly any yarn colour 3.Shawl pin

Pattern Notes:
Special Stitches
This is based on the stitches used in the Thistle Stitch Scarf which I wrote up and can be found here on Ravelry.com for those who are interested. It is made up of alternating 5-tr/dc shells and beaded V-stitches.
US Stitch Names
$\mathsf{S h e l l}=5$ dc in the single strand under the bead in the next v-stitch in the row below (see picture to the right where the first dc in the shell has been made). You need to insert your hook behind the bead in the row below and lift up the single strand (this is so that you don't hide your lovely shiny beads!). At the start of a row, the shell will be made in the top of the last dc from the row below and will be made up of a turningchain of 3 ch and 5dc which counts as a 6dc shell (this gives it a lovely curve to help the shawl stay on your shoulders).

BeadedV-stitch $=$ (dc in third dc of shell in row below, apply bead to loop on hook, ch to lock the bead, dc in the central dc of shell in row below again). When you are doing thebeaded$\cdot{\mathsf v}$ for the first time in any row, you will do this in the fourth dc (counting from the right) in the 6-dc shell which you ended the previous row with after you have started the new row with a 6-dc shell which "took" the first dc in the 6- dc shell.
Where do I put the hook? (US)
In this pattern, you will only ever be inserting your hook in four places: 1. In the top of the final dc in the row below when starting a new row, 2. In the fourth dc in a 6-dc shell at the start of a row, 3. In the third dc in a shell when working in pattern, 4. In the single strand under the bead in the beaded v-stitch when working in pattern.
UK Stitch Names

Yarn Substitution
If substituting a yarn, pick one with the ability to hold a block as lacework looks best when blocked. Acrylic is very difficult to block as you can only really "kill" it, so a wool or wool blend is the best choice. This particular yarn arrives from Colourmart oiled, so it is best to wash it beforehand (excellent instructions can be found via the Colourmart website in the knowledge base section). If you choose not to pre-wash the yarn, work a swatch using a much larger hook than you might otherwise as this yarn blooms a lot after washing - nearly

doubling in thickness. Oiled yarn can feel rough as you use it, so you may prefer to pre-wash so that you enjoy the process of creating your shawl more.
Applying Beads

There are two main ways to apply beads - by pre-stringing them or by applying them as you go with a crochet hook/dental floss/wire. 1 prefer to apply with a crochet hook as I find that the weight of all the beads affects my tension, but you may not be affected as much - experiment and find out.
