Markers Yarn Needle Gauge: 24 stitches and 32 rows per 4 inches/10 centimeters in stockinette stitch. This pattern is knit with much smaller needles than you would normally knit worsted weight yarn. Figure 1 - HAT CHART

HAT: Using MC and US size 3 $(3.25\mathrm{mm})$ $16"$ circular needle, cast on 128 sts. Place marker and join work, being careful not to twist your cast on stitches. Work in k2, p2 rib for 6 inches. On the next round, change to stockinette stitch (knit all stitches when knitting in the round) and increase twice in that row. Establishing Pattern Round: Continue working in stockinette stitch. Work Round 1 of Hat Chart, then repeat Round 1 of Hat Chart across the round 4 more times. You may wish to place a marker after each repeat of the chart in the round to help you keep your place. Complete Hat Chart, working each round of the chart as established in the previous round, knitting one repeat of the chart, and then repeating across the round 4 more times, until each round of the chart is finished. Hat shaping: After completing the Hat Chart, break the CC yarn, leaving enough of a tail to weave the ends in. Work one round in MC in stockinete. On the next round, (k2, p2tog twice) across the round until 4 sts remain, then k2, p2. Work k2, p2 ribbing for the next 10 rounds. On the next round, change to the double pointed needles, and (k2tog, p2tog) across the round, keeping the decreases in pattern. On the last round, k2tog across the round. Cut yarn leaving a tail. Thread a yarn needle with the tail and weave through the remaining stitches. Pull tightly, and weave in all ends.
MITTENS:
Use the following directions for both mittens. The only difference in the instructions for the right and left mitten is Round 15 of Mitten Chart 1, determining the placement of the thumb opening. Follow the WRITTEN instructions BELOW for Round 15 of Mitten Chart 1 as indicated for the knitting the right or lft mitten. Using MC and US size 3 $(3.25\mathrm{mm})$ double points, cast on 52 sts. Divide sts evenly among 3 needles and join work, placing a marker at the eginning of the round, being careful not to twist the cast on stitches. Work k2, p2 ribbing for $3\%$ inches. Increase 8 sts spaced evenly across the last ribbing row, for a total of 60 sts. Knit next Copyright $\copyright$ 1998 by Denise A. Daniel. Allrights reserved. row in stockinette with MC. Continuing in stockinette stitch, knit next round as follows: Knit Round 1 of Mitten Chart 1, place marker and knit Round 1 of Mitten Chart 2. Continue knitting rows of charts as established, for example, the next round would be: Round 2 of Mitten Chart 1, slide marker to right needle, and knit Round of Mitten Chart 2.
Thumb Opening:
RIGHT MITTEN: On Round 15, knit 2 sts of Round 15 of Mitten Chart 1, slide next 10 sts to a small stitch holder, or thread a contrasting yarn scrap through them to hold them. Cast on 10 sts, and continue knitting across the round, following Round 15 of Mitten Charts 1 and 2. This will leave an opening for the thumb, which will be added later. LEFT MITTEN: On Round 15, knit 17 sts of Round 15 of Mitten Chart 1, slide next 10 sts to a small stitch holder, or thread a contrasting yarn scrap through them to hold them. Cast on 10 sts, and continue knitting across the round, following Round 15 of Mitten Charts 1 and 2. This will leave an opening for the thumb, which will be added later. Hand Shaping: Continue knitting the remaining rounds of Mitten Charts 1 and 2 as established until you reach Row 45 where the hand shaping will begin. Work decreases as indicated in the charts. When you have completed the last charted row, K2tog across remaining sts with CC, cut yarn leaving a tail. Thread a yarn needle with the tail, and weave through the remaining sts. Pull firm and weave in ends.
Thumb:
Using double pointed needles, place 10 sts on holder or yarn scrap on double point. Using another double point and MC pick up a stith in the side of the thumbhole and five sts in the cast on sts. Using a third double point, pick up five more sts in the cast on row and one stitch in the other side of the thumb hole, for a total of 22 sts. Join work. Knit thumb sts in pattern established in Mitten Chart 1. Work for $2\%$ Or $2\,\,\!^{1}\!/\!_{2}$ inches. Work 1 row MC only. Then (k2tog, k1) across the rounds until 7 sts remain. Cut yarn leaving a tail. Thread a yarn needle with the tail, and weave through the remaining sts. Pull firm and weave in ends. Charts are attached on the next pages.
