Amphitrite Capelet Knitting Pattern: A Delicate, Drapey Capelet Design with Gauge & Measurement Guidance

Pattern illustration

Amphitrite was one of the sea-nymphs called the Nereids. The sea god Poseidon saw her dancing and fell desperately in love with her. He wanted Amphitrite as his bride, but she declined the honour and hid from him in the Atlantic Ocean. Poseidon sent a dolphin to locate her and persuade to marry Poseidon. The dolphin succeeded and was awarded a place in heaven. Amphitrite's and Poseidon's son was the fish-man Triton.

Info

Size: Circumference of the hem $150\;\mathrm{cm}$ , length $63-65~\mathrm{cm}$ , see further measurements on page 4. Use decreasings stated in parentheses if you want a wider neck and a little bit more room for shoulders. Gauge: $14~\mathrm{sts}=10~\mathrm{cm}\:/\:4$ inches in Chart 1 pattern, $16~\mathrm{sts}=10~\mathrm{cm}\:/\:4$ inches in Chart 2 pattern, $24\ \mathrm{rows}=10\ \mathrm{cm}\ /\ 4$ inches Needles: US 6 - 7 /4-4.5 mm or suitable for your yarn and gauge Yardage: approx. 540 meters / 590 yards Any quite fine, light and drapey yarn knit with needles you obtain desired gauge should give nice results. I made the multicoloured capelt of 78 grams of very fine acrylic machine knitting yarn (approx. 1300 - 1400 meters per 100 grams) doubled, needles US $6\,/\,4\,\mathrm{mm}$ .The dark blue one is knit of 120 grams of $100\,\%$ wool yarn (450 meters per 100 grams), needles US $7\:/\:4.5\:\mathrm{mm}$ Alterations made to the multicoloured capelet pictured above: Just after casting on there are extra rows 6 - 18 from Chart 1 before beginning from the row 1 of Chart 1.

Tip: It's easier to knit 13 stitches together if you first knit 4 stitches together and lift the stitch back to the left needle and then lift the rest 9 stitches one by one over the stitch and then lift the stitch back to the right needle.

Note! Charts are read from bottom to top, right to left, all rows are shown.

On rows 5, 14 and 23 of the Chart 1 slip the double yarn overs you made on the previous row and knit the stitches between them (elongated stitches).

Instructions

Cast on 208 stitches as stretchy as possible e.g. using a larger sized needle. Join in a circle and continue as follows: \*Work Chart 1, 26 rows. Continue then from Chart 2 and work rows 1 - 12 twice. Knit one row.\* Repeat $^{*}-*$ twice. Make decreasings at the same time on following rows: First and third decreasing rows: Chart 1, row 2. Second and fourth decreasing rows: Chart 1, row 20. See closer decreasing instructions on page 4. Work then garter stitch edging as follows: Row 1: purl Row 2: knit Row 3: purl Row 4: knit Row 5: purl Row 6: cast off stitches loosely. Cut the yarn and finish yarn ends.
