Swireling Ribs
by Melanie Hoffman

Gauge: 32 sts per $4^{\prime\prime}$ $10\,\mathsf{c m})$ in stitch pattern Materials: Doodlebirds Sock yarn, 4 oz. US #1 needles or sized needed to obtain gauge. This sock is knit from the top down using a standard heel. Use a $40^{\prime\prime}$ circular needle to magic loop. Magic looping is easier for working the stitch pattern. Needle #1 refers to the front half of the sock, needle #2 refers to the back half of the sock.
Loosely cast on 68 sts. A 1x1 tubular cast on makes a nice edge and is the stretchiest I've seen.
Join in a round being careful not to twist the stitches, divide stitches evenly, 34 on the front and 34 on the back. Row1: $^{\ast}\mathsf{K}1$ p1; repeat from \* around. Repeat row 1 for $1^{\prime\prime}$ Stitch pattern: The stitch pattern is a 34 stitch repeat. Work the first row of the chart across needle #1 and again across needle #2. Work rows 1-16 of the charts 3 times (or until body of the sock is as long as desired). $\circledcirc$ Adorabubble Knits/The Knitting Siren. Pattern isfor personal use only. Do not reprint and distribute this pattern without permission from the designer, Melanie Hoffman. Rearrange stitches as follows: Knit row 1 of charts across needle #1, knit the first 5 stitches from needle #2 onto #1. Put first 4 stitches of needle#1 onto needle #2. You'll have 35 sts on #1 and 33 sts on #2. Tha heal ic work on needla #)'c ctc

Work heel flap chart back and forth on the 33 heel sts until flap measures $2.5^{\prime\prime}$ Turn heel: Row 1: Sl 1, p17, p2tog, turn. Row 2: Sl 1, k5, ssk, turn. Row 3: Sl 1, p6, p2tog, turn. Row 4: Sl1, k7, ssk, turn. Repeat in like manner, ssk or p2tog across the gap, until all heel stitches have been worked. You should end having just worked a right side row. You are now set up to pick up the stitches along the side of the flap for the gusset.
Gusset:
Pick up and knit 20 stitches along the edge of the heelflap, place a stitch marker. Pickingup at row 2 of the "Top ofthe Foot'" chart, work the chart across the instep. Place a stitch marker and pick up and knit 20 stitches along the second side of the heel flap. You will decrease every other round at the stitch markers as follows: 1. Knit to 2 sts before first st marker, sk, work chart acrossinstep to second marker, k2tog, knit to end. 2. Knit to stitch marker, work chart across instep to second marker, knit to end. Repeat these 2 rounds until 68 sts remain. Continue on with no more decrease rounds, knitting from the chart on the top of the foot until piece measures about $1.75^{\prime\prime}$ shorter than desired length from the heel edge.
Toe Decreases:
Prep row, k1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts of needle #1, k2tog, k1. Knit needle #2 even. You'll now have 33 sts on each needle (66 total). Decrease 4 stitches every other round until there are 12 sts on each needle as follows: 1. Knit even. 2. $^{\ast}\mathsf{K}1$ , ssk, knit to last 3 sts of needle, k2tog, k1; repeat from \*. Graft the remaining 24 sts (12 stitches from each needle) together. Weave ends in. $\circledcirc$ Adorabubble Knits/The Knitting Siren. Pattern isfor personal use only.
