Eight of Yarnovers: A Handknit Tarot Bag Pattern with Delicate Lace Detailing

Eight of Yarnovens

I've been interested in Tarot since I first discovered it in college. I came to knitting later on and they're a wonderful pair. Reject the idea that you can only wrap your decks in silk. I think a handknit bag is just the thing. Add in a little lace and some nice fiber and you've got a perfect protective home for your cards.

This pattern works best in a solid or semi-solid yarn that will show off the lace pattern. However, if you've got a yarn that just speaks to you and you want to use it, go for it. You know what's going to work best for your decks, so trust your intuition and choose a yarn that you love.

materials

· Small amount of fingering weight yarn. The sample is shown in KnitPicks Hawthorne sock yarn. · Size 3 double pointed needles (or a circular long enough for magic loop if you prefer) or size needed to obtain stated pattern gauge. ·Length of ribbon for drawstring

instructions

Cast on 48 stitches using any method of cast-on that you like as long as it has some stretch to it. I used a long tail cast-on in the sample picture. Divide the stitches across three or four dpns and join for working in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Ribbing: K1, P1 Repeat this row until work measures 1.5 inches long. You can lengthen this if you like to give the bag a longer 'neck'. Begin Lace Chart or follow written directions below. There are 6 stitches in each repeat and there are 8 repeats in each row. Row 01: \*k3, ssk, yo, k1 repeat from \* around. Row 02 and all even rows: knit all stitches. Row 03: \*k2, ssk, yo, k2 repeat from \* around. Row 05: \*k1, ssk, yo, k3 repeat from \* around. Row 07: \*ssk, yo, k4 repeat from \* around. Row 09: \*k1, yo, k2tog, k3 repeat from \* around. Row 11: \*k2, yo, k2tog, k2 repeat from \* around. Row 13: \*k3, yo, k2tog, k1 repeat from \* around. Row 15: \*k4, yo, k2tog repeat from \* around. Row 16: knit all stitches. Repeat chart four times or until work measures 6 inches long, being sure to end on a plain knit (even-numbered) row. You can easily lengthen the bag to accommodate an oversized deck by adding more repeats of the lace section. Being careful not to drop any stitches, turn work inside out and arrange the stitches over two needles so that there are 24 stitches on each needle. Use a three-needle bind off to finish the bottom of thebag. If you've never worked a three needle bind off, this project is the perfect chance to learn it! finishing

Lightly block the bag as needed to open up the lace. Thread a length of ribbon through the top row of yarn overs to make a drawstring. (Optional) Embellish with beads or crystals on the drawstring if you like.
