Seedy Cable Socks by Rebekah Frank email: franklybeka@ gmail.com Ravelry: franklybeka

Model: Adam Frank Photos: Rebekah Frank Difficulty: Intermediate Diamond shaped cables protect a reverse stockinette background from the seedy stitches trapped within. Braided cables form an excellent border to this central motif. I designed these socks for Sockdown November 2013's Cable challenge. The pattern has been made available for the February 2014's Under-appreciated challenge. SIZE S [M,L]
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Fits: 8.5 [9.75, 11] inch foot circumference. Alternate sizes can be made by going up or down in needle size for larger or smaller socks, respectively, or by modifying the Seedy Cable Chart (and your stitch count) accordingly.
MATERIALS
Knit Picks Stroll Fingering [75% Superwash Merino Wool, 25% Nylon ; 231 yd/211 m per 50g skein]; 2 skeins, or about 400-450 yards of your preferred sock yarn. My sample socks are knit with Knit Picks Stroll Fingering in the Cork colorway, gradient over-dyed with 619 Crimson Jacquard acid dye. 1 set US #1.5/2.5mm double-point needles, or circular needle(s). GAUGE
28 sts/48 rows = 4" in stockinette stitch
PATTERN NOTES
Much of this pattern assumes some knowledge of sock construction. Feel free to substitute methods which have worked for you in the past at any point (esp. at my vague-ish heel section). I have not tested anything but the Large size, and in my sample I used a Fish Lips Kiss Heel (heel-pattern sells for \$1 in Sox Therapist's Ravelry store, and is totally worth it), but you don't have to. I have written out a shortrow heel for the toe-up instructions, and a flap and gusset heel for the cuff-down instructions. Please call me out on errors. I can't fix what I don't know is broken. Just be nice; it is a free pattern. Also, all the charts (and the key) you will need for one size are on the same page, so feel free to skip the chart pages for sizes you don't need.
TOE-UP PATTERN
Work whatever toe you'd like, star, box, short row cup, whatever. Make sure to wind up with 64 [72, 80] sts. Here's what I did: Turkish CO 24 sts, (12 sole sts, 12 instep sts). Round 1, Sole: K. Instep: K. Round 2, Sole: K1, M1, K to 1 st before end, M1, K1. Instep: Repeat sole sts. Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until you have 64 [72, 80] sts.
Foot:
Sole: K. Instep: Work TU Border Chart, Seedy Cable Chart (according to size), TU Border Chart. Continue through charts repeating as necessary until aprox. 2 [2.25, 2.5] inches from desired foot length. (Adjust this distance and the heel instructions according to whatever alternate heel you would like to use, adding a gusset if needed.)
Heel:
This is where I worked a Fish Lips Kiss Heel. If you do not have that pattern continue as follows, (or work whatever style of heel you feel comfortable with). Continue work using only the sole sts (now heel sts). Short-rows will be worked back and forth across these 32 [36, 40] sts. Row 1(rs): K to 1 st from end, w&t. Row 2 (ws): P to 1 st from end, w&t. Row 3: K to 1 st before wrapped st, w&t. Row 4: P to 1 st before wrapped st, w&t. Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have 11 [12, 13] wrapped sts on either side and 10 [12, 14] non-wrapped sts in between. Row 5: K to first wrapped st, pick up and knit wrap(s) with the wrapped st\*, w&t. ow 6: P to first wrapped st, pick up and purl wrap(s) with the wrapped st, w& Repeat rows 5 and 6 until only one wrap remains on either side. Work row 5 once more ending at the \*. Continue across the instep sts according to the charts. K across heel sts making sure to pick up and knit the wraps with the first st. Heel sts become back sts, and instep sts become front sts. Next Round, Front: Work according to chart. Back: K. Repeat this round until you finish either row 14 [18, 22] or row 30 [38, 46] of the appropriate Seedy Cable Chart. Next Round, Front: Work according to chart. Back: Establish cable pattern on back sts by repeating front sts. Leg: Work in pattern across front and back to desired height, ending after completing a Seedy Cable Chart repeat. (I had 4 diamonds from toe to cuff in my Large sample.) Cuff: Work 15 rounds of K2, P2 ribbing. BO loosely in pattern. FINISHING Weave in ends.
CUFF-DOWN PATTERN
Loosely CO 64 [72, 80] sts. Work 15 rounds K2, P2 ribbing. Leg: Work [CD Border Chart, Seedy Cable Chart (according to size), CD Border Chart] twice around. Continue in pattern to desired length. You may wish to switch to the heel shaping a few (4-12) rows either before or just after finishing your last repeat of the Seedy Cable Chart, so as to maximize the pattern coverage on the foot. For my large sample I had 2 complete Seedy cable Chart repeats, plus 8 rows.
Heel Flap:
This section is worked back and forth across the first 32 [36, 40] sts. Hold the remaining stitches for the instep. Row 1(rs): [sl1, K1] across. Row 2(ws): sl1, P to end. Repeat rows 1 and 2 for approximately 2.5 [2.75, 3] inches (work less for low arches, more for high arches). Be sure to end after a ws row. truly adventurous can try continuing the cable patterns in the heel flap, instea
Heel Turn:
Row 1(rs): sl1, K 18 [20, 22], ssk, K1. Row 2(ws): sl1, P 7, p2tog, P1. Row3: sll, K to 1 st before gap, ssk, K1. Row 4: sl1, P to 1 st before gap, p2tog, P1. Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all heel flap sts have been incorporated (20 [22, 24] sts). Next Row: K across the heel sts, pick up and knit one st in each slipped-stitch along heel flap edge (remember this number), pick up and knit one st in the corner, continue across the held instep sts in pattern, pick up and knit one st in the corner, pick up and knit one st in each slipped-stitch along the heel flap edge (make sure this number matches the one from the other edge), K up to first instep st. This is your new end of round. Sts are now divided into instep and sole.
Gusset:
Round 1, Instep: Continue in pattern. Sole: K1, ssk, K to last 3 sts, k2tog, K1. Round 2, Instep: Continue in pattern. Sole: K. Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until there are 32 [36, 40] sole sts. For a tighter or looser fitting foot you can work more or fewer repeats. Just be aware, you'll have to adjust your toe sts and decreases accordingly.
Foot:
Instep: Continue in pattern. Sole: K. Continue in this manner until 2 [2.25, 2.5] inches from desired length. Be mindful of your Seedy Cable Chart repeats. It is best to end after you finish either row 14 [18, 22] or row 30 [38, 46] of the appropriate Seedy Cable Chart. If these rows don't match up with your foot length you can switch to St st early or extend the Seedy Cable Chart into the toe some. When you are at about 3 [3.25, 3.5] inches from desired foot length measure your cables and evaluate where you are to determine you best course of action. For my large sample I got lucky. My foot length matched up perfectly with the end of a Seed Cable Chart repeat. I have four complete repeats from cuff to toe. Toe: Round 1, Instep: K1, ssk, K to 3 sts from end, k2tog, K1. Sole: Repeat instep sts. Round 2, Instep: K. Sole: K. Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until 24 sts remain (12 instep sts, 12 sole sts).
FINISHING
Use Kitchener stitch to graft toe closed. Weave in ends.
