FORAOIS
Foraois, (meaning “forest" in Irish), is a straightforward triangular shawlette that starts with a simple garter tab. The stockinette section allows the yarn to speak for itself, while a cable down the centre spine keeps the knitting interesting! The feather-and-fan edging can be worked in two ways; continue in the same yarn for an understated look, or introduce contrasting colours to make it a little more lively! Instructions for both methods are included. A single 100g skein of sock yarn is plenty for the single-colour version, while extra repeats are included for the striped version.

Yarn:
Single colour version: Debbie Bliss Fine Donegal (379m/100g) in 54013 Leaf Striped version: Townhouse Yarns Camden Tweed (400m/100g) in Menace; Townhouse Yarns Grafton Mini-Skeins (400m/100g) in Saoirse
Materials:
4mm 80cm circular needle; 1 cable needle; darning needle for weaving in ends; 1 stitch marker; waste yarn.
Gauge:
Fine Donegal shawl had a post-blocking gauge of 22sts/10cm; however, while gauge is not crucial, remember that required yardage/yarn requirements may vary if your gauge is significantly different.
Abbreviations:
C4F: slip two stitches onto cable needle and hold to front. Knit next two stitches, then the two stitches from cable needle.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Garter tab cast on: CO 3 sts using waste yarn. Switch to main yarn and knit 12 rows. At end of the 12th row, do not turn work. Pick up and knit 6 stitches along the side of the garter tab, between the ridges; unpick provisional cast-on and pick up the 3 live stitches. 12 sts on needle. Next row: k3, p6, k3 (WS) Main body of shawl: Row 1: k3, yo, kl, yo, pm, k4, yo, k1, yo, k3. Row 2 (and all WS rows in main body): k3, purl to last 3 stitches, k3. Row 3: k3, yo, k3, yo, sm, k4, yo, k3, yo, k3. Row 5: k3, yo, k5, yo, C4F, yo, k5, yo, k3. Continue pattern as established, working C4F (on RS) on every sixth row, until you have 200 sts.
Feather & Fan edge:
In this section, you will continue to work C4F on the centre four stitches every six rows. Some rows in this edging are knit on the wrong side instead of purled; however, this would mess up your nice cable, so please make sure you continue to PURL the centre four stitches on the WS rows as established. You will have enough yarn in a single skein to work the pattern as written up to Row 32 plus picot bind-off; however, additional repeats have been included for the striped version as you'll have a lot more yarn to play with!
