Chalice Shawt by Marga Frances-Perez

The idea of designing my own shawl has been playing in my head for awhile. However, I have to give credit where credit is due. My biggest inspiration for creating my own patterns comes from Dee O'Keefe's own designs. She has been a huge influence in me as a designer. Being a Maths teacher, stitch counts and repeats come easily to me, however, picking the right lace pattern or even creating your own can be a bit challenging. 1 have learnt many stitches, shapes and skills thanks to Dee, her ravelry group and her easy-to-follow instructions on her designs. The Shawl is knitted top down in a triangular shape . To create this shape , we need to increase the number of stitches as we knit. The shawl construction starts with a few stitches at the top of the neck and further yarn overs are added every RS row. The shawl is both charted and written. There are two edge stitches on both sides (represented as “e") and a centre stitch (represented with C). The sample shawl has been knitted in fingering yarn using 1.5 skeins = 548.6 meters (600.0 yards), 150 grams of Posh Yarn Hannah Sock. To achieve the size of the shawl 156cm by 68cm (61" by 28"), size US 3 - 3.25 mm needles have been used. While the first stitches fit on straight needles it is recommended to change to circulars towards the mid body. The shawl can be enlarged by adding extra repeats of two of the charts (body and pre-edge). It can also be customised to a shawlette version with less repeats. Gauge: 28sts to 32sts = 4 inches Chalice Shawl @ 2014 by Marga Frances-Perez Many many thanks to my group of knitters/testers from “Guia para tejer bien": Nenapiruleta,Abcalvino,MIR,Caro,Patagi,Acolgar,Maria58,pacaor,lusi and Dam58 At the end of the pattern you can find more photos of their projects and a guide on what other yarn and needles they have used

Set up rows: Cast on 5 stitches with your preferred method. These five stitches represent 2edges + 1centre +2edges. Knit 5 (5sts) Row 1) (RS): e,e,yo,c,yo,e,e (7sts) Row2) (WS): e,e,p3,e,e From here follow either row 1 or written instructions of chart 1 RS rows are odd number rows and WS are even number rows. Charts only show RS rows. For WS rows always knit two edge stitches . purl all stitches and knit the last two edge stitches.

It is highly recommended though to use a life line pre knitting the following chart.
Chart 4:
This chart can be knitted as many times as wanted depending of the size of shawl you want. The simple shawl (in green) has been knitted with 9 repeats. The stitches to be repeated are shown between brackets. At the end of chart 4 there is a table with the stitch count. To give an idea , the number of repeats within a row are the number of repeat you are doing plus 2. After the first time chart 4 is knitted you should have 3 lace designs on each side of the shawl. After second time , 2+2 = 4 lace designs etc .. Left side of shawl

A bit of Maths Each time we knit a row, we increase two stitches on each side of the triangle , in total 4 ( the yo's next to the edge stitches and the yo's next to the spine/centre) This means that each chart of 5 rows we will be increasing 5\*4 =20 stitches each time we finish a repeat of chart 4. If we spread these 20 stitches equally on both sides of the triangle , we have 10 & 10 stitches which would be enough to knit another lace design in the next repeat.

Elastic BO: Knit first stitch, knit second stitch, work both sts as SSK. This will leave a st in our right needle. Knit another st, work both stitches as ssk . It is recommended to use a needle at least a size or two higher for theBO. I personally prefer to block and then weave in ends. To Block, soak the shawl in warm water during at least 20min. Gently squeeze the water out and damp with a towel. To obtain a stymetric shawl , start pinning down the top of the shawl on the spone. Then open the “wings". Measure the length from one corner to the other. Divide this by two . Pull the bottom of the spine down to the measure just calculated and pin down. Example: If the shawl measures 150cm from one corner to the other , the lenght of the spine should be 75cm (estimated can be 80cm or 72cm) Once we have these points pinned , block the rest of the shawl. I usually follow the below sequence
