KNITTED GNOME PATTERN
\*\*PERMIssIONs: This pattern may be used to create personal pieces only and may not be used for creating items to sell in any capacity or locale or be sold itself.

MATERIALS:
Size6dpns Worsted weight wool yarn\* in two Main Color (MC) and Contrast Color (CC) - small amounts only needed, far les than i ball, perfect for scraps Woolroving Darning needle Embroidery floss or thread in matching colors (optional) GAUGE: Approximately 5 stitches/inch and 7 rows/inch \*Note: Pattern can also be done with bulky weight yarn by reducing the number of stitches by approximately half and increasing needle size a bit (gauge will be different).
BODY:
Cast on 20 stitches with MC and divide evenly on dpns. Join and knit until 2 1/2" long. Break yarn, leaving a long tail, then thread tail onto darning needle and pull through the live stitches, removing dpns as you go. Pull tight to close the hole. Stuff with wool, adding enough that the piece is firm but not overstuffed (you'll want the bottom to sit flat, not bulge, in order for the gnome to be able to stand). Pick up and knit 20 stitches around the bottom of the tube, 1 row from the edge, on the inside (to form a slight curl at the base of the gnome), again placing stitches evenly on the dpns and joining to knit in a circle, the knitted stitches on the inside and purl bumps on the outside (the bottom). Knit 1 round. K1, K2tog for second round, then k2tog each round until you have 3 stitches left, then break yarn and thread onto darning needle. Pull thread through the 3 stitches to close the hole. Thread another piece of yarn onto darning needle and then through one side of each stitch about 3/4" from the top of the stuffed tube. Pull tight to create the head. Knot. Weave in all ends.

HAT:
Cast on 21 stitches with CC and divide evenly on 3 dpns . Join and work in garter stitch (alternate knit and purl rows) for 4 rows. Knit the next row. Knit 7, k2tog 3 times. Next row, knit. K6, k2tog 3 times. Next row, knit. K5, k2tog 3 times. For each row after that, k2tog at the end of each needle until you have 3 stitches left. Close as you did the body, then weave in ends. Whipstitch onto head using matching yarn or thread/floss.
SCARF:
Cast on 3 stitches with CC then work an I-cord (knitting the same 3 stitches back and forth without turning the needle) until about 6" long\*. Bind off and weave in ends. Wrap around neck of body, twisting or knotting to taste. Sew in place using matching yarn or thread/floss. \*Note: The length of the scarf will depend, in part, on the type of twist you want to close it. If you want to simply overlap the scarf sides (as pictured above) then 6" will be long enough. If you want a full knot or more complicated twist (as below), knit the I-cord about an inch longer (7").
