Nordic Folkloric Crocheted Fringe
The Swedish word "Kavelfrans" describes a type of fringe that often is used in Swedish and Finnish folk costumes. I learned to crochet these when I was working with my Finno-Swedish folk costume. I usually use a crochet hook in size 1 - 2 mm to crochet these fringes. You also need some cardboard, synthetic thread and a sewing needle. 1. Prepare a piece of cardboard that is as broad as the wanted fringe height, and a bit longer than the wanted fringe length. You can also use a ruler or stick in suitable size. 2. Wind yarn a few times around the cardboard. Take a different yarn and make a starting loop. Crochet tight and small half sts along the upper edge of the wound yarn. Each crocheted stitch is supposed to tie together three or four threads. Wind more yarn around the cardboard and continue crocheting until you have a fringe that is a suitable length. 3. Place the cardboard with the fringe on top of the item that you want to decorate. Use synthetic thread and start to fasten the fringe at one end. Sew tight sts around each group of threads, so that they will stay in place. When you have sewn a few sts, carefully move the cardboard to the other side, so that the fringe starts to drop off of the cardboard. After each time you move the cardboard, you need to adjust the spacing of the sts that remain on the cardboard. Continue until the entire fringe is fastened, and remove the cardboard completely. 4. Use a good pair of scissors to carefully cut the fringe open along the bottom edge.
