DOUBLE-KNITTING
LABELWITH AMSTERDAM CANAL HOUSE
YARN & NOTIONS
Two contrasting colours of (fingering) yarn, at least 4 metres of each, colour "A" and colour "B" A set of knitting needles, slightly smaller sized than usual, a slightly thicker crochet hook and a tapestry needle
ABBREVIATIONS,DETAILS&TIPS
k = knit, p = purl The first and the eleventh stitch (1 & 11) are self-edges, see description of needle 2. When double-knitting, the stitches of the front and back are cast on alternately, in sets of 2 (1 front, 1 back). These are worked alternately as well: knit the front and purl the back stitch (as in 1xl ribbing), but in doing so, move both yarns to the front (for purling) and to the back (for knitting). Resources (pictures, videos) for double-knitting can be found on the internet under the heading 'technique double knitting'. Mark the front of your label by placing a marker and try not to twist the strands of yarn (unless intentionally for a different self-edge). Stretch your knitting on the right hand needle, especially when knitting different motifs at the front and at the back. Extras: use an extra strand of strong sewing thread when making the loop; crochet or embroider a decorative edge to the label (with a third colour)
SET-UP ROW
Cast on 11 stitches with a double strand, i.e. 22 stitches in total, 11 of which in colour A and 11 in colour B (placed at random on the needle).
NEEDLE 1
2x [k1 with B, both yarns to the front, pl with A, both yarns at the back], 7x [k1 with A, both yarns to the front, p1 with B, both yarns to the back], k1 with B, both yarns to the front, p1 with A, keep both yarns in front, now purl the last pair of stitches together with both yarns.
NEEDLE 2
Slip the first pair of stitches together as if to purl, continue knitting/purling the other stitches as they present themselves and purl the last pair of stitches together with both yarns.
PATTERN
Follow chart(s) from needle 3, continue self-edge stitches as in needle 2.
FINISHING
Bind off with a double strand, working each pair of stitches (front + back) as one stitch. Make a loop starting with the last double stitch by crocheting a chain, fasten and weave in the ends. www.loretkarman.nl www.detorenvanklinker.nl Design: @ Daphne Ruben (amsterdaph on ravelry) Version 10 November 2013
