The Commuter Scarf Pattern: A Free Diagonal Garter Knit Scarf Design by Ruth Ellen

THE COMMUTER SCARF

A bias knit scarf so simple it can be knit on the bus while commuting to and from work. This scarf highlights the natural beauty of Noro Iro yarn & its long repeats by knitting in garter stitch on the diagonal. This scarf is pure pleasure to knit, to wear and to give. A.K.A., Diagonal Garter Scarf

Abbreviations

gm: gram WPI: Wraps Per Inch sts: stitches cm: centimeter in: inch mm: millimeter US: US size knitting needle m: meter

Pattern:

Cast on 4 stitches and then proceed to Chart l, row 1. Odd numbered rows: read the chart from right to left. Even numbered rows: read the chart from left to right. Right side (RS): Odd numbered rows. Wrong side (Ws): Even numbered rows When you finish rows 28 & 29, keep repeating these two rows until you reach your slipknot. When you reach the end of your first skein of wool, do an invisible felted join and continue knitting. At the point that you reach your slipknot finish the row you are currently knitting. Then proceed to Chart 2 as follows. If your last row was on the right side (a 29 row), go to Chart 2, row 28 (i.e., skip row 29 of Chart 2). Alternately, if your last row was on the wrong side (a 28 row), go to the start of Chart 2, at row 29. After completing Chart 2, weave in your ends using a blunt darning needle. Then, if desired, block your work to the indicated measurements. (I recommend blocking this scarf for improved drape and to square the ends.)
