Yarn: less than 1 skein each Lily Sugar n Cream black and red (or any Other $100\%$ cotton yarn) Project finished size: 4" diameter (not including head) Gauge: Not really important. Adjust your hook size or yarn to get the size you want.
Pattern notes:
To change color, work last dc of first color until 2 loops remain on the hook, yarn over with second color, draw second color through to complete dc, drop first color to back of coaster and carry across, working over unused color (to hide it). Colors will be dropped and picked up throughout the $3^{\mathsf{r d}}$ round.
Pattern:
With red, ch 4, join to make ring. Round 1: ch 3 (counts as first dc), 7 dc in ring, join to $3^{\mathsf{r d}}$ ch (8 dc stitches) Round 2: ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in next 7 dc, 1 dc in last dc, join to third ch (16 dc stitches) Round 3: ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in next 2 dc, \*change to black yarn, 2 dc in next dc, change to red, 2 dc in next dc, (black) 2 dc in next dc, (red) 2 dc in next dc, (black) 2 dc in next dc, (red) 2 dc in next 2 dc, (black) 2 dc in next dc, (red) 2 dc in next dc, (black) 2 dc in next dc, (red) 2 dc in next dc, (black) 2 dc in next dc, change to red dropping black completely leaving a enough to weave in ends, (red) 2 dc in next dc, dc in last dc, join to third ch (32 dc stitches - 12 black, 20 red)
Round 4: ch 3 (counts as first dc), $^{\star}2$ dc in next dc, 1 dc in next dc, repeat until last dc, 2 dc in last dc, join to third ch (48 dc stitches). Fasten off. Head: (refer to photo above with yellow arrows and corresponding letters) With right side facing, on round 4, find the middle dc between the two black spots (a). Count 2 dc to the right and attach black yarn (b), 6 dc into middle dc (a), slip stitch to 2 dc to the left of the middle dc (c), Fasten off. Finishing: Weave in all ends (red and black). Block if necessary. Add frosty cold beverage and enjoy!
