I decided to publish a book of spicy summer knits after living in the land of perpetual summer for the past nine years. Living in Southern California hardens you against the arid desert air, and the frequent hot winds that blow from the inland empire, the scores of cars stuck in traffic, and the constant press of the unwashed masses in every public place. We Southern Californians cool off by slathering ourselves in sunscreen and heading to the beaches and bays that line the coasts and cooling ourselves with natural water power. Even in the height of heat I'm never without my knitting, so I focused on curating patterns for the collection that hearken to the gods of summer. 90 Degrees, Hollyhock Wrap, Sun in Glory, and Jelly Fish socks were written for summer. The remaining patterns, Flyleaf, Artemis, Beaded Cuff Mittens, Loch Ness, Nora's Diamonds, Levada, and Holly & Ivy are perfect for planning for the inevitable winter gift giving season and are portable, small, and lovely little holiday projects suitable for knitting in the height of summer heat. Each project may be knit at any time of year of course, but why not knit a few of these small gifts in the heat and then put them away until Christmas? Remember the hazy, heady days of your summer solstice while sipping a nice cozy winter time tea. Tip over your project and watch summer sand pour out, like the quick passage of so many summer days. Nothing in life rivals the power of the sun's rays, except perhaps the carnal power of the water.

BY ABBIE TILDEN Holly & Ivy is the perfect small project for carrying around in the summer heat. This project is a nice knit for winter while frolicking in the summer and trying to forget the inevitable onset of fall and then winter. The scarf is constructed in two pieces and joined together using a Three Needle Bind Off, much like Autumn joins Summer and Winter. The Holly berries are added later, perhaps during the season of eggnog and peppermint mochas while hurriedly knitting all those last minute gifts.

HOLLY BERRIES
Using red yarn and tapestry needle, make three French knots for each pair of Holly leaves as indicated on chart. Keep an eye on your red yarn so that it's not peeking through on the right sidewhereyou don'twant it to,and weave in ends carefully. You might find it helpful to work a small knot around a purl stitch on the wrong side, and use thatknot to anchoryour Frenchknots. Wash your scarf carefully and block well, making sure to pin out scallops of border to your liking.
