Hartlea Mittens Pattern: Thumbless Stranded Colorwork Baby Mittens for Winter

Pattern illustration

These thumbless stranded colorwork baby mittens were designed for a friend's first child using sock yarn and superwash wool. The tightly knit wool provides a nice barrer against Michigan, and other, winters. This would be a great project for leftover sock yarn as the pattern requires about 20 grams of the main color, and less of the contrast color. The nestled heart motif is adapted from a Selbuvotter design, but is also a play on the recipient's name. The palm of the mitten is slightly wider than the back of the hand to accommodate curled fingers.

Cuff

Cast on 42 stitches in Main color and divide evenly on needles. K1,p1 around for 1.5 inches. Switching to stockinette stitch, increase four stitches evenly, 46 stitches. Begin Chart pattern.

Finishing

When 26 stitches remain (13 stitches on front, 13 stitches on back of mitten), use the kitchener stitch to bind off. Weave in ends and block to even tension.
