Victoria Street
Designed by Zena Nicholson Photos by Jaime Hinchley and Zena Nicholson Modelled by Jaime Hinchley, Claire Hinchley and Zena Nicholson

The house my grandfather lived in sits on Victoria Street, almost 1o0 years old. Since he passed it has been painted pink, had numerous repairs done and looks a lot fancier than it ever did; but I like to think it is still the same creaky old house that provided so many fun places to hide during childhood games of Hide and Seek. Victoria Street was, and still is, a place that brings images of family, laughter and love to mind. This pattern was inspired by that lovely street full of so many happy memories, and I hope that you will create some happy memories of your own while knitting it. This hat was designed to satisfy those garter stitch and cable cravings I get from time to time that I'm sure a lot of you are familiar with. I combined my love of garter stitch and simple cables with my obsession with cosy beanies that have the perfect amount of slouch. I hope you enjoy knitting Victoria Street as much as I did. Happy knitting!

Finishing
18 sts remain. Cut yarn leaving a 20.3cm/8" tail. Using yarn needle weave yarn tail through remaining stitches and pull sts closed. Weave in any ends and block hat. It is important to block your finished hat to show off the stitch pattern and cables properly.
Recommended blocking technique:
Step 1: Blow up a balloon until it measures 55cm/21 and a half inches in circumference at widest point. Step 2: Wet your hat under a running tap with cool water until it is completely soaked through. Step 3: Gently squeeze/press water out (do not wring). Step 4: Wrap hat in a tea towel, place it on the ground and stamp on it a few dozen times to get excess water out. Step 5: Place hat on the blown up balloon. Sit the balloon on a tall cylindrical container approx. 36cm/14.2" in circumference and 14cm/5.6" tall and hang the brim of your hat around the outside of the container. Make pom-pom approx. 7.6cm/3" in diameter and attach to dry hat. If knitting hat in 2 colours make pom-pom in same colour as brim.
