Big Fish Heart Shawl Recipe

Big Fish Heart Shawl by feydesigns I made this shawl up as I went along, as a gift in a wonderful Ravelry group swap. My swap partner chose the film "Big Fish" as her swap "theme" and I knit this shawl as something that the character Sandra might have worn. The film "Big Fish" is about the story of family and how all we really need resides in the heart, hence the name of this shawl. Abbreviations: k: knit/K: knit p: purl/P: purl kfb: knit in the front and into the back of one stitch (inc 1) yo: yarn over st(s):stitch or stitches pm: place marker slm: slip marker sl1kw: slip one st knit wise M1: make one increase: insert the left needle from front to back under the horizontal strand between the two stitches and knit this new stitch through the back.

Overview:
The beginning of this shawl is a long shallow garter stitch (knit every row) triangle, made by increasing the edges each row and the middle every third row. When that part is big enough, change to a contrasting color and work in stocking stitch (knit right side, purl wrong side). In this stocking stitch section, trade the yarn overs in the center spine for a more hidden make one increase. Another stripe (or two) in the main color stocking stitch...and then...the knitted lace bind off! Wet block, pin out the lace points and enjoy.

Gauge: is not really important. Adjust your needle size to get the cozy drape that you like. YouNeed: 1. (us)size 7 circular needles (24" or 32")...or a size that you like for a worsted weight shawl. 2. Two (us)size 7 dpns...or dpn to match your chosen needle size. 3. A nice worsted weight yarn, in a MC (main color) and CC (contrast color). If you are buying yarn for this shawl, grab at least 200-400 yards of your main color. The amount of yarn you will need will depend on how big you want to make your shawl and how many stripes you want. Some worsted yarn ideas: Quince & Co Lark, Three Irish Girls Springvale Merino, Yarn Love Charlotte Bronte, Berroco Vintage, Old Maiden Aunt BFL Worsted/Aran. (You may need to adjust your stitch counts for the OMA yarn.) The original was knit in a Knit Picks Merino Silk and trimmed in Cascade 220 Heathers. Begin: With MC cast on 3 sts Set up row 1: kfb, K1, kfb (5 sts) Set up row 2: kfb, knit to center st, yo, pm, K1, pm, yo, knit to last st, kfb Row 3 & 4: kfb, knit to last st, kfb Row 5: kfb, knit to marker, yo, slm, K1, slm, yo, knit to last st, kfb Continue, repeating rows 3, 4, and 5 for the garter stitch base. This will be a long, shallow triangle. You want about 180-190 sts on your needle, give or take a few. End on a row 5 (with the yarn overs). Changing to CC, and working in stocking stitch: ow 6: kfb, purl to marker, slm, K1, slm, purl to last Row 7: kfb, k to last st, kfb Row 8: kfb, p to marker, M1, slm, K1, slm, M1, purl to last st, kfb Repeat rows 7 and 8 until you like the width of your contrasting stripe. If desired, switch back to the MC and continue with rows 7 and 8 for another stripe.

'py with this bottom stocking stitch stripy section-- end on a purl row with a st count divisible by fo Then get out your dpns and get ready for the knitted lace bind off! (Here: http://feydesigns.com/2009/03/16/knitted-lace-edging-bind-off/ is my blog post about the bind off.) Basically, each 8 row repeat of the lace edging uses up 4 of the live stitches in the stockinette part of the main pattern. You will work the edging on two dpns, back and forth, incorporating one live stitch of the main shawl body on rows 2, 4, 6, & 8.
Knitted lace bind off as follows:
cast on 5 sts onto one dpn 1: (ws) Sl1kw, pl, yo-twice-, p2tog, p1 (6sts) 2: (rs) Sllkw, k2,p1, k1, k2tog--one st from your dpn and one st from bottom edge of shawl 3: (ws) S11kw, p3, yo-twice-, p2 (8sts) 4: (rs) Sl1kw, k2,p1, k3, k2tog--one st from your dpn and one st from bottom edge of shawl 5: (ws) S11kw, pl, yo-twice-, p2tog, p4 (9sts) 6: (rs) Sl1kw, k5, p1,k1, k2tog--one st from your dpn and one st from bottom edge of shawl 7: (ws) S11kw, p8 8: (rs) BO 4 sts, k to last st, k2tog--one st from your dpn and one st from bottom edge of shawl (back to 5 sts) Repeat 1-8 until all sts of your piece are magically worked into lace edging!

Finishing: Weave in ends and wet block, pinning out the points on the lace edge. Enjoy!
