Selkie Hat Knitting Pattern: A Gentle Ocean Swell Inspired by Donegal Tweed

Selkie Hat

A knit design by Kat Strieby

Pattern illustration

The yarn-overs and decreases of this Donegal Tweed-inspired hat create a curving ribbed pattern that invokes a gentle ocean swell, one a seal might happily ride on a misty Irish morning before coming to shore and shedding her skin... Yarn: Worsted weight, 200 yd. I used Studio Donegal's Soft Donegal 2-ply, 100g, 190 m/210 yd. Needle: US 8 (5 mm) or needle size to obtain gauge. Gauge: 20 stitches x 24 rows in pattern stitch= 4 inches square. Finished size: fits 20-21" head; to adapt to smaller or larger head circumferences, change needle and/or yarn size. Level: Intermediate Notions: Yarn scissors, tapestry needle
