FINGERLESS MITTENS To fit: Child or small to medium Ladies Hand

Materials required: set of 4 double pointed size 2.5 mm knitting needles, approx 160 yards/150 metres DK/Light worsted yarn (roughly equivalent to a 50 g ball) for ladies mittens or 4-ply/fingering for child's mittens, stitch holder.

Ability level: INTERMEDIATE Finished sizes (approximate as these mittens do stretch) Ladies mittens: 71z-inches/19 cm long by 312-inches/9 cm across palm Child's mittens: 612-inches/16 cm long by 3-inches/7.5 cm across palm The same pattern and needles are used for both Ladies and Child's versions of the mitten, but the yarn thickness is different, to give the size difference

FINGERLESS MITTENS (make 2 alike)

Cast on 52 sts Make sure the sts are spread evenly over three needles, using 4th needle and taking care not to twist cast on sts start pattern by knitting into 1st st you cast on and working in rounds, knitting across sts on each of three needles in turn. You may find it easier to use a stitch marker to show the beginning of the round. Rounds 1-20: (k 2, p 2) to end. Rounds 21-36: k Round37:K9, m1, k1,m1, kto end (54 sts) Gauge Round 39: K 9, m 1, k 3, m 1, k to end (56 sts) Round 40: k Ladies mittens Round 41: K 9, m 1, k 5, m 1, kto end (58 sts) 7 sts and 10 rows = 1-inch/2.5 cm Round 42: k over stocking [stockinette] stitch Round 43: K 9, m 1, k7, m 1, kto end (60 sts) Round 44: k Childs mittens Round 45: K 9, m 1, k 9, m 1, k to end (62 sts) 8 sts and 11 rows = 1-inch/2.5 cm Round 46: k over stocking [stockinette] stitch Round 47: K 9, m 1, k 11, m 1, k to end (64 sts) Round 48: k Round 49: K 9, m 1, k 13, m 1, k to end (66 sts) Round 50: k Round 51: K 9, m 1, k 15, m 1, k to end (68 sts) Round 52: k Round 53: K 9, m 1, k 17, m 1, k to end (70 sts) Round 54: k Round 55: K 9, slip next 19 sts onto a stitch holder for thumb, k to end, taking care to pull yarn tightly over gap where thumb sts were. (51 sts) Round 56: k9, m 1, k to end. (52 sts Rounds 57-62: k Rounds 63-70: (k 2, p 2) to end Cast off. Rejoin yarn to 19 sts on stitch holder, spread these sts over 3 needles and work in rounds as follows: Round 1: k to end, k into base of m 1 on round 56. (20 sts) Rounds 2-6: (k 2, p 2) to end.
