Gauge

Materials
Lion Brand Hearltand in Acadia, Sequoia, Joshua Tree, approx 75 yds each Any hook/yarn can be used, but your final project may be a different size or color based on supplies used. I recommend using a hook a size or two smaller than recommended for the yarn for tighter stitches.
Abbreviations & General Instructions
US terms used throughout sl st = slip stitch st = stitch ch = chain sc = single crochet fpsc = front post single crochet hdc = half double crochet dc = double crochet tr = triple crochet sk = skip csdc = chainless starting dc fsc = foundation single crochet Chainless starting double crochet is recommended instead of a traditional turning chain. When working the scales, [ch 1,fpsc, ch 1] is recommended instead of the traditional ch-3 turning chain for scales that lie flatter and neater. In both cases, the pattern simply lists a dc, but you can use a turning chain or whichever alternative you prefer. Repeat stitches between the asterisks the indicated number of times.
Base
Create a magic loop
Round 1: ch 2 (does not count as dc), 12 dc into magic loop, sl st to first dc to join - 12 dc total Round 2: ch 2 (does not count as dc), 2 dc in same st as join, 2dc in each st around, sl st to first dc to join - 24 dc total For a wider bag, simply add additional increase rounds. For round 3 you'd increase in every second st, for round 4 you'd increase in every third st, etc. Each additional increase round adds two scales to the bag.
Scales
The scales are worked as a two-row repeat. A forms the framework for B, which creates the actual scales. A uses a csdc as the first dc in the round; for B, the first dc of the first scale is created with a [ch 1, fpsc, ch 1]. I highly recommend these ch-3 alternatives as they will make the stitches lie much nicer. Round 3A: dc in each dc - 24 sts total Round 3B: \*5 dc five down post up first dc, ch 2, 5 dc five up post of the next dc, sk 2 dc\* around, sl st to fpsc to join - 6 scales total Round 4A: sl st to center of scale, \*2 dc in the center of scale, 2 dc in the space between two skipped dc\* around, sl st to first dc to join - 24 dc total As you work the 2 dc in the space between the two skipped dc, enclose the stitches from part B of the previous round to keep the scales closer to the body of the bag. Round 4B: sl st in first two dc, \*5 dc down post of next dc, ch 2, 5 dc up post of next dc, sk 2 dc\* around - 6 scales total Rounds 5-8: Repeat rounds 4A & 4B four times, for a total of six rounds of scales, or as needed until bag is desired length.
Top
Round 9: sl st to center of scale, \*2 dc in the center of scale, 2 dc in the space between two skipped dc\* around - 24 dc total This forms the keyholes that you will be threading the closure of the bag through. For a closure Dieses Chart zeigt NUR den 6. und 7. Rapport. Davor und danach geht das Muster wie Round 10: ch 1 (does not count as hdc), hdc in same st as join and in each st around - 24 hdc total Round 11: ch 1 (does not count as sc), sc in same st as join and in each st around - 24 sc total
Drawstring
fsc 45 or until drawstring is desired length. Thread through round 9. For a thinner drawstring, use a foundation sl st, a regular ch, or even just a plain piece of yarn. FO, weave in ends, and enjoy!
