Detailed Guide to Creating a Unique Granny Square Crochet Blanket with Ruffled Edges

Pattern illustration

The centres are just a basic granny pattern, in seven rows yellow, two rows grey, three rows blue. I did five by three squares, to go at the foot of a bed but still be enough to go over a body if one wanted to snuggle under it. This made for a weirdly long and skinny blanket though, so after joining all squares with a single-crochet joining seam, I edged the entire thing in two encircling rowsof blue.

Then, on the long edges, I went back and forth in a straight granny pattern for a further seven rows, for a total of twelve. I travelled back along the short edge to get to the other long edge once I'd finished my 12 rows, and then went along the other short edge once to bind off. Then, I put three DC stitches of grey into each stitch along the border, which gave it a ruffled effect. The whole blanket is approximately 6 1/2 feet long by 4 feet wide. I haven't actually taken measurements, but the photo with the white bedspread is a king-sized bed, so that's a scale indication.
