Hlekkir: Stranded Mittens Knitting Pattern with Detailed Instructions and Charts

Hildur Yr isberg Hlekkir are stranded mittens, in three adult sizes, that are knit from the cuff up. Thumb is placed by knitting stitches onto waste yarn, slipping them back onto the left needle and reknitting them according to the chart. The pattern is intended for worsted weight yarn, or yarn that is labeled at 18-20 stitches per 10 cm (4"). Yarn used in samples: Lopi-light/léttlopi/Reynolds light (gray and black.) Lark from Quince & co (red and white) Karisma from Drops (mustard and brown) Sneldan 3-ply (green and white). ① Hildur Yr isberg 2015. Do not distribute or share without designers explicit permission. Amounts: 134 (142) 169 yards [123 (130) 155 meters] of MC, at most 87 yards of CC. Gauge: 13 stitches and 12 rows give 2" (5 cm) square. Needles: Double pointed needles that give you correct gauge. Needles used in samples: Lopi-light, US 3 [3 mm] and US 6 [4 mm]. Lark and Karisma, US 4 [3,5 mm] and US 7 [4.5 mm], Sneldan 3-ply, US 6 [4 mm] and US 8 [5 mm]. Sizes: S (woman's S), (M) (woman's L, man's S-M) L (man's L). You will also need about 15" of waste yarn in a contrasting color to use for thumb placement. Thethumbcanbeknitted in pattern (shown in gray, red and yellow sample) or single color (shown in green sample). The pattern directions are given according to a patterned thumb. Please note that if the thumb is knitted with a single color, the gauge is often a little looser. A good measure to take is to knit one stitch less on to the waste yarn or 8 (8) 9 stitches. Method: Cast on 40 (40) 44 stitches and join, to knit in the round, being careful not to twist. Round 1: \*K2, P2. Repeat from \*until the round ends. Repeat round 1 until you have 22 (22) 23 rounds or 3.5 (3.5) 4 inches. Increase round: Knit all stitches. Increase 8 (8) 10 stitches evenly across round. 48 (48) 54 stitches in all. Knit according to chart A (B) C. In round 19, thumb is placed. continue to knit in pattern. Right mitten: Knit in pattern across needles 1-3. Knit the first 2 stitches of needle 4. Using waste yarn, knit 9 (9) 10 stitches. Slip these stitches back onto left hand needle and continue to knit in pattern. Knit until mitten reaches recipients little finger or until chart indicates that it is time for finger decreases.

Left mitten: K1 according to chart. Using waste yarn, knit 9 (9) 10 stitches. Slip these stitches back onto left hand needle and

Finger decreases:

Only MC is used. Needle 1 and 3: K1, ssk, knit across needle.

Repeat this procedure until 2 stitches remain on each needle. Break yarn and draw through remaining stitches to close top. Please note: In size L the number of stitches cannot be evenly divided with four. Decrease in manner described above until 10 stitches remain in total. Break yarn and draw through remaining stitches to close top. Thumb: Pick up stitches above and below waste yarn, 18 (18) 20 stitches. Remove and discard waste yarn. Distribute stitches over four needles. Knit according to chart C (D) E. If thumb is single color, knit until it measures 2.2" (2.75)" 3.5" (or 5.5 (7) 9 cm). Decreasing (only MC is used): Needle 1 and 3: K1, ssk, knit across needle. Needle 2 and 4: K across all stitches in MC until 3 stitches remain on needle. K2tog, K1. Repeat this procedure until 6 (6) 8 stitches remain. Break yarn and draw through remaining stitches to close top.

Abbreviations:

MC: Main color CC: Contrast color K: Knit P: Purl SSK: Slip 2 stitches individually as if to knit. Knit those together through the back loops (left leaning decrease). K2tog: Knit 2 stitches together as one.
