Materials Needed:
1 ball of Red or Dark Red 1 ball of Blue or Royal Blue Small amount of White and Orange G Hook H Hook Buttons (optional) Felt (optional) Yarn Needle and Measuring Tape
Abbreviations:
st = stitch sts = stitches hdc = half double crochet dc = double crochet BLO = back loops only sctog = single crochet next 2 stitches together sc = single crochet ch = chain sl st = slip stitch tc = triple crochet Notes: Throughout the pattern, Chain 1 will equal a single crochet. Chain 2 will be equal to a half double crochet. I didn't work this hat in a continuous round, but can you can work your hat in a round if you would like. Just end the round with a few sc and sl st to even it out, before making the final round of reverse single crochets.
Stitch Gauge
Using the H hook and worsted weight yarn: 7 hdc and 5 rows = 2” square The height of each stitch doesn't matter as much, you will continue to work the hat until you reach a certain length for each size. Use whatever hook needed to obtain this gauge on the hats. Finished Size: (Don't include the top point of the hat when measuring the hat height.) Newborn - circum. 13"-14", hat height 6" 3-6 Months - circum. 14"-17", hat height 6.5"-7" 6-12 Months - circum. 16"-19", hat height 7.5" 12-24 Months - circum. 18"-20", hat height 8" Child 3-10 years- circum. 19"-20.5" hat height 8.5" Teen - circum. 20.5"-22" hat height 9"-10\* Adult - circum. 21.5"-22.5 hat height 9"-10" Large Adult - circum. 22"-23" hat height 9"-10"\*

Bottom of hat: Switch colors
Round 1: (BLO) In back loop only, ch 2, hdc around hat, sl st to ch 2 (count will vary depending on size) Round 2: In both loops, Ch 2, hdc around hat, sl st to ch 2 Round 3: Repeat round 2 until you have reached the desired hat height. Measurements should only include this bottom portion of hat and not the point. It will look cute if the hat is a little tall Last Round: ch 1, reverse single crochet around hat in white yarn. (You can sc instead if you would like, but the reverse single crochet (crab stitch) gives a nice finishing edge. Fasten off and weave in all lose ends. Go back to Round 1 with the white: Work in (FLO) Front loop only. Sl st in front loop, ch 1, reverse single crochet around hat, fasten off and weave in ends.
Add a braid: with white yarn for the wick
Cut 3 strands of white yarn about 30" long. Hold all strands of yarn and fold in half. Insert folded part of yarn into the side of the hat on the bottom row. Only pull the loop part way out. Now grab the loose ends of the yarn and insert them into the loop. Pull the loose ends tight until the loop is snug to the hat. Start your braid by dividing the strands into 3 equal parts. After braid is made, tie it into knot and pull tight on each strand. This will make it near impossible to come undone
Flame: w/G Hook and Orange Yarn (make 2)
Row 1: Ch 3, sc in the 2"d ch from hook, sc in last ch, ch 1 turn Row 2: 2 sc in first st, 2 sc in next st, ch 1, turn Row 3: Sc in next 4 sts, ch 1, turn Row 4: 2 sc in first st, sc, sc, 2sc, in last st, ch 1, turn Row 5: Sc in 4 sts, sctog, ch 1, turn Row 6: Sctog, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in last st, ch 1, turn Row 7: Sc in next 5 sts, turn Row 8: (Ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc, dc) skip a stitch in flame, sl st in next, (Ch 6, sc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc, dc, tc) sl st in last st on flame. Fasten off and weave in ends.
W/G hook and Red Yarn:
Holding both of the flames together, matching the shape (one will be backwards), sl st in both, ch 1, sc around, making 3 sc in the top point of each flame. Stop when you get 34 of the way around and tuck in the bottom portion of your braid into the

flame pocket you are making. Continue to your sc closing the two flames over the bottom of the braid. Fasten off, leave a tail and sew shut over the braid so that it won't slide out.
Decorating your Firecracker (Bottle Rocket):
Have you or a child cut out pieces of felt in different shapes (circles, stars, swirls, etc.) and then sew or glue those onto their firecracker hat. This will allow them to personalize it any way they would like and it will be a fun project for them too. I have included some star and starburst templates in different sizes, just in case they want to trace them with a pen and cut out the felt. I also thought it would be fun to cut out a starburst and backstitch a word on it. (TNT, boom, pop, bam!, Pow) I wrote a crochet star pattern if you would rather not use felt. (Below) You can attach buttons to your stars as well. Have fun and be creative with your firecracker.
Stars: with G Hook and white worsted weight yarn (Make several)
Ch 3, sl st to form a ring Round 1: Ch 1, 4 sc in ring (5) Round 2: \*Ch 3, sc in 2"d ch from hook, hdc in next ch, sl st in next hole on circle\* repeat from \* 4 more times. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing to your firecracker. @ Copyright Notice: You have permission to sell the finished product locally and online.
