Happy Sock Monkey

In cream yarn.
Cast on 12 sts using Judy's Magic Cast-on. Increase four stitches evenly every other round until 24 sts. Knit 10 rounds.
Ltgs:
Change to brown twist yarn. Knit 48 rounds. Increase two sts on each leg at the inner thigh each round, twice. Join to form body. (56 sts) Rearrange stitches so 26 are on front needle and 30 are on the backside needle. Knit 5 rounds.
The Rotund backside:
Change to cream yarn. Rnd 1: k28, wrap st and turn (l use Cat Bordhi's technique for making invisible wrapped sts from New Pathways for Sock Knitters: Book 1) Rnd 2: p27, wrap next st and turn Rnd 3: k to one less than previous row, wrap st and turn Rnd 4: p to one less than previous row, wrap st and turn\*\* Repeat Rnds 3 and 4 until 23 st are left on needle

Switch to red yarn. Rnd 1: k to one less than previous row, wrap st and turn Rnd 2: p to one less than previous row, wrap st and turn Repeat Rnds 1 and 2 until 17 st are left on needle Rnd 3: Knit to first wrapped st, lift wrap over needle away from you, k2tog, turn Rnd 4: Purl to first wrapped st, lift wrap over the needle toward you, p2tog, turn Repeat Rnds 3 and 4 until red wrapped sts run out. Switch to cream yarn. Repeat Rnds 3 and 4 from above until all wrapped sts are incorporated.
body:
Change to brown twist yarn. Knit 72 rounds. Switch to cream yarn. Knit 10 rounds. Rnd 11: K28, place marker, k28, place marker. Rnd 12:K1, SK, Kto 3 sts before marker, K2tog,K1, slip marker, K1, SK, Kto 3 sts before marker, K2tog, K1 Rnd 13: Knit Repeat Rounds 12 and 13 until 28 sts remain Rnd 14: K1, SK, Kto 3 sts before marker, K2tog, K1, slip marker, K1, K, Kto 3 sts before marker, K2tog, K1 Repeat Rnd 14 until 12 sts remain. Stuff body to desired density and kitchener remaining sts together.
Arms:
In cream yarn. Cast on 12 sts using Judy's Magic Cast-on. Increase four stitches evenly every other round until 24 sts. Knit 10 rounds. Change to brown twist yarn. Knit 68 rounds Stuff to desired density. Rnd 69: K1 st from front and back of yarn together to end (12 sts) Rnd 70: Purl 1 row Bind off. Explanation: Rows 69 and 70 essentially close the arms and create a "hinge" to attach to the body. This keeps the monkey from having arms that eternally beg for a hug.
Mouth:
Cast on 29 sts. Rnd 1: Knit one rnd. Rnd 2: k28, wrap st and turn Rnd 3: p27, wrap next st and turn Rnd 4: k to one less than previous row, wrap st and turn Rnd 5: p to one less than previous row, wrap st and turn Repeat Rnds 4-5 until 23 st are left unwrapped Rnd 1: k to one less than previous row, wrap st and turn Rnd 2: p to one less than previous row, wrap st and turn Repeat Rnds 1-2 until 17 st are left on needle Rnd 3: k to first wrapped st, lift wrap over needle away from you (to the private side), k2tog, turn Rnd 4: p to first wrapped st, lift wrap over the needle toward you (to the private side), p2tog, turn Repeat Rnds 3-4 until red wrapped sts run out. Switch to cream yarn. In brown twist yarn: Cast on 14 sts using Judy's Magic Cast-on. Increase four stitches evenly every other round until 30 sts. Knit one round. Decrease four sts every other round until 14 sts. Bind off. Stuff loosely and stitch "ear marks" into ears. That's allthere is to it. To ensure your sock monkey is happy, make sure you name it and give it lots of hugs.
