Mastering the Misnomer: A Step-by-Step Crazy Crochet Stitch Tutorial for Soft, Pliable Afghans

Crazy Crochet Stitch Tutorial

Pattern illustration

The name of this stitch is misleading, it's not crazy, it's not even difficult..it's just slightly unconventional. Instead of going back and forth in the usual way, Crazy Stitch is worked on the bias and produces a soft, pliable dense fabric suitable for baby and adult afghans. Because this pattern is worked on the diagonal, Row 1 is just a corner, Row 2 adds a cluster to each of two sides of that corner (forming a triangle), and subsequent rows add clusters to the long side of the triangle. When the desired width is reached, the number of clusters is decreased every row to turn the triangle into a square or rectangle.

Row 1: (Corner Row) Ch 6, dc in 4th chain from hook and each of next two chs. Row 2: (First increase) Ch 6, dc in 4th chain from hook and each of next 2 chs, turn by flipping the corner row up and sc around the ch-3 from Row 1, ch 2, 3 dc around the same ch-3. Row 3: (Increase) Ch 6, dc in 4th ch from hook and in each of the next 2 chs, turn and \*sc around the ch-2 from previous row, ch 2, 3 dc around the same ch-2\*, repeat from \* to \* once.

Row 4: (Increase Row) Ch 6, dc in 4th ch from hook and in each of the next 2 chs, turn and \*sc around the ch-2 from previous row, ch 2, 3 dc around the same ch-2\*, repeat from \* to \* to end. Repeat Row 4 (increase) until afghan reaches desired length or width. For a nearly square afghan, continue to Rows 5 and 6. For a rectangular afghan, repeat Rows 4 and 5 until desired length is reached then repeat Row 6 until only one cluster remains, end with a ch 3 and sc around the ch-2 from previous row.

Row 5: (Decrease Row) Ch 3 and turn, \*sc around the ch-2 from previous row, \*ch 2, 3 dc around the same ch2\*, repeat from \* to \* to end. Row 6: (Decrease Row) Ch 3 and turn, sc around the ch-2 from previous row, \*ch 2, 3 dc around the same ch-2, sc around the ch-2 from previous row\*, repeat from \* to \* to end.
