Not-Diagonal Stripey Baby Blanket
Whenever friends have babies, I want to do something for them. This typically means a blanket. Rather than my go-to "pattern" of a diagonal stripey blanket, I thought I'd be different: a not-diagonal stripey blanket! The sample uses four colors, but you could easily use more or less, make it asymmetric - whatever you want, really! I love Knit Picks Shine Worsted for my baby blankets, because it is wonderfully soft, shiny - and machine-washable! Obviously, you can pick whatever yarn you like in whatever weight. The choices are endless.
Materials and Gauge
Yarn: Knit Picks Shine Worsted (60% Pima Cotton, 40% Modal), 75 yards/50g: 3 balls each in 2 colors, shown here in Peapod and Macaw 2 balls each in 2 colors, shown here in Willow and Cream Needles: Size 5mm/US size 8 circular or straight needles Gauge: 16 stitches and 35 rows/4" in garter stitch. Gauge is not critical to this project.
Abbreviations
k knit sl1 slip one (with yarn in front) ktbl knit through the back loop RS right side The sample is knit in Macaw (color 1), Willow (color 2), Cream (color 3), and Peapod (color 4).
Instructions
Cast on 110 stitches in color 1. Base row: ktbl, knit to 1 stitch before the end, sl1 with yarn in front. Turn. Repeat this row until you have used up 2 balls of color 1. Add in color 2, knit two rows of base row in each color, alternating. Carry the unused color up the side. Continue until you have run out of the current ball for one of the colors. Switch in color 3 for color 1 at beginning of RS row. Continue until you have run out of the current ball for one of the colors. Switch in color 4 for color 2 at beginningof RSrow. Continue until you have run out of the current ball for color 3. Continue working color 4 until you run out of yarn or have knit the same length as you did for color 1 (the cast on uses a lot of yarn). Bind off, weave in ends, wash and block if desired. Enjoy!
