BOXING Clever
by Stitchnerd Designs

stitchnerd: Malabrigo Mecha on 8 mm (US 11) Needle: circular in the size you need to get gauge (see pg. 2) - max. 80cm/30" long. If the cable is not too long, you'll get a nice flow as you knit; if it's longer, you'll have to keep adjusting - blog link for what to do: http://stitchnerd.blogspot.be/2011/01/tip-too-few-stitches-foryour-circular.html Size: approx. 60cm/24" around x 50cm/20" tall Yarn: Bulky, Aran or DK - approx. 220m/240yds; or if holding double, you'll need twice the yardage, i.e. approx. 440m/480yds (see below for more details).
Abbreviations:
k= knit RS: right side p= purl WS: wrong side Bulky version: Malabrigo Mecha (or similar) - it's listed as bulky, but if you are substituting, be sure to check and use one with a similar yardage - Mecha has 120m/135yds per 100g. For the original I used nearly 2 skeins (240m/270yds) to make a nice deep cowl that gives options for wear. You could make a shorter cowl with less yardage.
Swatching:
I recommend that you swatch so that you can knit to one of the gauges listed on page 2 and get the suggested size. To swatch you need to cast on at least 22 stitches, so that you can measure in the middle section as shown on the right. Swatching info: use the chart or the written version. On top of the crocheted elements - yo leed an earring hook (any type would vork), and jump rings or split ring onnect all elements togethe For written version: on the RS, work as described; on the WS just knit the knits and purl the purls. For the chart: on the RS knit the blank squares and purl the dots; on the WS purl the blank squares and knit the dots.

Tip: I recommend you try on your cowl as you make it and stop when you like the height. Adjusting: if you want to adjust the stitch counts, be sure to use a multiple of 18. You can find more yarn ideas and projects linked to the pattern page on ravelry.
Notes:
Join the stitches in the round after you have worked the very first round. Place a marker for the start of the round and be sure not to twist as you join. You can place a marker for each repeat if you like, but once you've done a couple of rounds you'll probably find you can see the stitches and don't need the markers. Cast on using cable cast-on - see table below for stitch counts. Link: http://stitchnerd.blogspot.be/2011/10/cable-cast-on.html

Sizing table:

Chunky | size 8mm/US 11 | 12 | to cast on 72 |

1st set of boxes
Rounds 1-4: \*k9, p9, repeat from \* Rounds 5-8: \*k3, p3, repeat from \* Rounds 9-12: \*k9, p9, repeat from \*
If you want to check how many rounds you have worked it's easy to count the lines of purl bumps.
2nd set of boxes Rounds 13-16: \*p9, k9, repeat from \* Rounds 17-20: \*p3, k3, repeat from \* Rounds 21-24: \*p9, k9, repeat from \*
Repeat these 24 rounds.
Continue until you have just enough yarn left to bind off or like the height. Stop after a Round 12 or 24. Bind off using classic lifted bind-off knitting the knit stitches and purling the purl stitches. Block lightly if needed.
