Caped Gnome Lise Stoessel 2013
Little friends for my Waldorf Nursery students.

Materials: 2 skeins Sugar 'n Cream in complimentary colors 1 skein flesh colored yarn, worsted weight wool fleece to stuff size 7 knitting needles yarn needle for sewing up crochet hook size H Finished Measurements: about 5" tall Skills needed: stockinette stitch, basic sewing for seams, basic crochet (for flat bottom), stuffing. Difficulty: easy Instructions: Use stockinette throughout Body: starting from bottom edge OUsing body color yarn, cast on 18 stitches OKnit in stockinette for 13 rows. OChange to skin color, leaving a 10" long tail of body color OKnit 6 rows OKnit 2 tog across the row, 9 stitches remain. OCut the yarn, leaving a 10" long tail. Using the yarn needle and yarn tail, slip stitches from off the knitting needle, close the circle and pull tight for top of head. Pass needle back through all the stitches to reinforce oWith same yarn and needle, continue to sew the back seam of head. oStuff the head with wool fleece Use the yarn and needle to cinch the neck, by making a running stitch through the stitches at neck edge, closing the circle and pulling tight. Fasten yarn end and weave the end in (or simply hide it in the stuffing). Using tail of body color yarn and yarn needle, sew the back seam of the body. Stuff the body with wool fleece. OUsing the crochet hook and body color yarn, crochet a small spiral “mat" that will form a flat bottom for the hem edge of the body. Leave a 10" tail.

Cape:
0 Using body color yarn and knitting needles, cast on 16 stitches. OKnit 16 rows in stockinette. 0 Decrease 1 stitch at the beginning of each row by knitting 2 together, until you have 1 stitch left. Cut at 10" tail. 0 Using the yarn needle and the yarn tail, sew the two long edges together to form the pointed peak of the cape. Fit it to the gnome body and leave it open from the point where the face shows. 0 Using the contrast color yarn and the crochet hook, single crochet around the edge of th cloak. Make a tie for the neckline of the cloak: Take a 24" length of the yarn Twist it tight in the same direction of the yarn's natural twist Fold it in half, retaining the tight twist. Knot the two ends together. OOpen it out into a big loop (it will want to kink and curl...) OPosition it so that that the knot is at the center between your two hands OLet one hand go. OSmooth out the twist. The knot should be in the middle of the twisted sti 0 Using the crochet hook, thread the twisted tie in and out through the neck “line" of the cape, taking care that the knot is placed at the inside center back of the cape. 0 Cinch the cape a bit to fit the neck and secure the tie at the cape edges by passing the tie back through a couple of stitches and out again to the edge.
