Back:

Cast on 40(50) stitches using the cable cast on. As you begin to knit, place a marker on the front to indicate the right side of the garment. Knit in garter (i.e., knit every row) until the back is 7(9.5) inches from the cast-on edge. Bind off on a wrong side row.

Left Side:

Cast on 20(25) stitches using the cable cast on. As you begin to knit, place a marker on the front to indicate the right side of the garment. Knit in garter until the left side is as long as the back. Bind off on a wrong side row.

Right Side:

Cast on 20(25) stitches using the cable cast on. As you begin to knit, place a marker on the front to indicate the right side of the garment. Knit in garter for 1(1.5) inches. Buttonhole row: On the next right side row, knit one, yarn over, knit 2 together, knit to the end of the row. Knit for another 1(1.5) inches and then repeat the buttonhole row. Complete this pattern of buttonholes until you have the number that you desire (3-5 buttons work best). The important thing is to keep the buttons spaced evenly apart. Knit until the right side is as long as the back. Bind of on a wrong side row.

Arms: (Make 2)

Cast on 30(40) stitches using the cable cast on. As you begin to knit, place a marker on the front to indicate the right side of the garment. Knit for 5(7.5) inches. (Shorten or lengthen the arms as desired. Pattern is made a little longer in the arms so that the cuffs can be folded over.) Bind off on a wrong side row.

Finishing:

Lay pieces flat with right sides up. Sew the back and front pieces together halfway across the front pieces. Next, sew the arm pieces to the front and back sections. Then, sew the side seams and arms together. Attach buttons to the left front to correspond with the buttonholes. Weave in all ends.

Notes and Tips:

When adding a new ball of yarn, it is best to join the ball at the beginning of a row. Sally Melville's book The Knit Stitch has great tips on how to sew garments together. Part of what makes this sweater so great is the soft velvet yarn and how forgiving it is. Maks a fantastic first sweatr project The ya calld for is great because t is also machine washable. Enjoy picking out the buttons. It is always a good idea to buy an extra button so that the sweater can be used and handed down to the next baby to enjoy! $\mathbf{\mathcal{O}2005}$ Gina Kanouse as Brownie Knits.
