Buttercup Shawl
An oversized crescent shawl inspired by the Annis pattern by Susanna IC and published at www.knitty.com. This shawl is knit using 3 skeins of Louet Merlin Sportweight yarn. For those wanting a smaller wrap, I encourage you to look at the original Annis pattern. Final dimensions: 70 inches across ;cent, 20 inches deep at the center and 8" deep at the sides. Techniques used: Cable cast on, chart reading, yarnovers, double decreases, knit two together, slip slip knit, nupps and shortrows. For a good video tutorial of nupps go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSlzYLbasHY. Gauge: 15 stitches and 22 rows = 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch after blocking. (Gauge isn't essential, a flowing fabric is desired.) Needles: Circular needles size 8 and 10 (5mm and 6 mm)

Directions: Use a cable caston and the larger needles to cast on 435 stitches. Lace Border: Switch to the smaller needles.

Follow the chart starting with row one, placing a marker after the first 10 stitches, then every 18 stitches to mark the 23 repeats of the lace pattern. Follow the chart for rows 1-20, working the nupps following the black notations. Do rows 21-44 working nupps following the red notations. Finish with row 44, a wrong side row. 339 stitches remain.

Short row shaping: (all turns will be completed without wrapping any stitches) Row 1: Slip one stitch and knit 173 stitches. Turn the work. Row 2: Slip one, purl 8, turn the work. Row 3: Slip one, knit 7, ssk, knit 2. Turn work. Row 4: Slip one, purl 9, p2tog, purl 2. Turn work. ow 5: Slip one, knit until one before the last turn, ssk, knit 2. Row 6: Slip one, purl until one before the last turn, p2tog, purl 2. Repeat rows 5 and 6 until all stitches have been worked, for a total of 54 times or 108 rows. End with a wrong side row. Bindoff: Row 1: Slip first stitch knit across the row. Row 2: Purl two stitches together, slip the completed stitch back to the right needle, repeat across the whole row. Pull yarn through last stitch and clip. Finishing: Weave tails from beginning and end in. Clip all loose ends to 3". Wash the shawl in the machine on delicate. Toss in the dryer on low until the shawl is warm but still damp. Lay out the shawl on a table and form into a crescent, gently pulling the points out. Air dry. After the shawl is dry, clip any ends close to the wrong side. Notes: While I prefer to splice my yarns, due to the high linen content in Merlin I joined new balls in this project this way: I knit with both yarns for several stitches, knotted the yarns together, continued to knit with both for several more stitches and then dropped the ending yarn.
