Mary Ellen's Cowl is an oversized cowl with a chevron design. This cowl has the added versatility that it can be worn down around the neck and up as a hood. Finished Measurements: 30" circumference, 14" high
Materials:
Berroco Comfort DK yarn (50% super fine nylon/50% super fine acrylic) Approximately420yards or 2 skeins. Care instructions: Machine wash, inside out on gentle cycle with warm water. No bleach. Tumble dry on low heat. Do not over dry. Do not iron. Do not bleach. Needles: Size US 7 (4.5 mm) 24 "circular needles or size to obtain gauge. Gauge: 5 stitches x 8 rows in stockinette stitches = 1 inch
Special Terms:
K2tog:Knit 2 stitches together. Ssk: Slip the next 2 stitches, one at a time as if to knit, to the right needle. Insert the left needle into the fronts of these two stitches and knit them together. YO:Yarn over.
Cowl Instructions:
Long tail cast on 140 stitches. Join to beginning working in the round being careful to not twist the piece. Place a marker at the beginning of the round. Knit 2, purl 2 for five rows to create the edge ribbing. On fifth row add a stitch marker every 10 stitches. This will be a lifesaver when you start the pattern! Chevron Pattern (multiples of 10 stitches) (you can use the attached chart, if you prefer, for following pattern) Row 1 \*YO, ssk, knit 8; repeat from \* around. Row 2 \*Knit around. Row3 \*Knit 1, YO, ssk, knit 7; repeat from \* around. Row 4 \*Knit around. Row5 \*Knit 2, YO, sk, knit 6; repeat from \* around. Row 6 \*Knit around. Row 7 \*Knit 3, YO, ssk, knit 5; repeat from \* around. Row8 \*Knit around. Row 9 \*Knit 4, YO, ssk, knit 4; repeat from \* around. Row 10 \*Knit around. Row 11 \*Knit 5, YO, sk, knit 3; repeat from \* around. Row 12 \*Knit around. Row 13 \*Knit 6, YO, ssk, knit 2; repeat from \* around. Row 14 \*Knit around. Row 15 \*Knit 6, K2tog, YO, ssk, knit 2; repeat from \* around. Row 16 \*Knit around. Row 17 \*Knit 5, K2tog, YO, ssk, knit 3; repeat from \* around. Row 18 \*Knit around. Add five more rows of ribbing at bottom (knit 2, purl 2 across).
