The bag is worked without cutting the thread and get shape by short row knitting. Schematically this looks like that (see the picture). Cast on 96 sts = 30 (wedge) + 36 (cable pattern) + 30 (wedge). Leave thread tail long 5-10 cm (2-4 inches). Pattern and wedges are worked together. Work wedges in short rows decreasing 2 sts every row until you have 2 sts (28, 26, 24, ... , 6, 4, 2). Then work in rev st st 6 rows 0ver all 30 sts. Repeat 3 times before you reach middle of bag. Another half of bag is worked in short rows too, but instead decreasing, increase sts count - 2, 4, 6, .., 24, 26,28. At the same time work cable pattern (see chart), repeat 1-16 rows 13 times

- criss-cross 2 sts to the right: find 2nd unworked st (count from just worked st), knit it in the front side of piece without transfering, knit 1st st, take out both sts

- criss-cross 3 sts to the left: slip 2 sts onto stitch holder, keep it front, purl 3rd st, knit sts from stitch holder - criss-cross 3 sts to the right: slip 1 st onto stitch holder, keep it back, knit 2 sts, purl st from stitch holder Bind off all sts, cut the thread leaving a tail long 5-10 cm (2-4 inches). Holding the tails, pull off central sts of wedges. Upper wedge: join thread in the corner (place where wedges converge), pick up and knit 1 st (center) and sts over left wedge, turn piece, knit to beg, then pick up and purl sts over right wedge, turn, knit to beg.

Short rows: beg, 5k, turn, 5p + 1p (central st) + 5p, turn and continue working short rows in st st, inc 5 sts in every row. When all sts will be used, work 1 row - purl over all sts. Picot edge: work 6 rows in st st; 7th row: \*k2tog, yo\*; 6 rows in st st. Fold edge in twain and knit 1 row, picking up sts of the strap 1st row.

Pattern illustration

Zipper strap: cont knitting: 8 rows in st st, bind off. You can make it otherwise: don't cast off sts and knit some rows using a waste yarn. Before sewing, steam the strap, tack with zipper, remove this yarn and sew on zipper over live sts. Second wedge and straps is worked in the same way. Knit and sew down loops for handles. Sew down the lining glued by interlining. Attach the handles.
