Big Snore Lace Scarf by Mickie Swall

This scarf looks exactly the same on both sides, so there is no right or wrong side. And yes it can be very b-o-r-i-n-g to knit but that feature makes it a perfect project for road trips, watching TV, or sitting on the beach or on bleachers. Not quite as brain-numbing as endless garter stitching, it has a simple mix of knits, purls, yam-overs, and double decreases, and makes a nice rhythm as you go. ←-----The purple scarf was knit with Patons Beehive Baby Sport, 70% acrylic/ 30% nylon in color #09309 Violet Mist. I used 2.5 ounces or about 225 yards. The scarf was steam-blocked to 6" by 62". The varigated green/blue scarf was knit with Bernat Baby Jacquards, 90% acrylic/ 10% nylon in color #06131 I'm A Big Boy. I used 2.61 ounces or about 260 yards to make it. It steam-blocked to about 6" x 66".- 一Both models are knit with size US 6 (4 mm) needles. Although the two models were knit with sport weight baby yarn, you can use any yarn you wish, keeping in mind the heavier weight yarn you use, the wider the scarf will be. A sock weight yarn will yield a narrower scarf. Use a size needle that is suitable for your weight of yarn. Pattern is a multiple of 13 stitches plus 2.

Note: the “k3tog" is used in the writen instructions, but you can use whatever "3 into 1" double decrease is easiest for you. Page 2 of this pattern shows five of the many different double decrease stitches that you can use, and you can see they all look very similar.
To make Scarf:
Loosely cast on 41 stitches. The long-tail cast-on method is recommended. Knit this Set Up Row once: k 8, p 4, (k9, p4) 2x, k3 (41 sts) Repeat Pattern Row (or row 1 of the chart) until scarf is desired length. There is no “right" or “wrong" side. The Pattern Row is repeated exactly the same on both sides of the scarf.

Cast off "in pattern", that is, knit the knits and yam overs, purl the purls. Tip: bind off stitches sequence is the same as the Set Up Row: k 8, p 4, (k9, p4) 2x, k3. Looking at the center stitches in the sample below you will see double decreases made five different ways. There are other ways, but these are the five I chose at random to make this sample swatch for illustration. I used stitch #5 for the purple scarf model and stitch #4 for the variegated. Use the one that is easiest for you to do, as the end results are very similar.

#1 Sssk - Slip 1stitch knitwise, slip 1stitch knitwise, slip 1 stitch knitwise, insert left needle through front loops of 3 slipped stitches and knit 3 together through the back loops. #2 s2tog, k1, psso - Slip 2 stitches together (as if to knit 2 tog), knit the next stitch, pass the 2 slipped stitches over the knit stitch. #3 s1, k2tog, psso - slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit the next two stitches together, pass the slipped stitch over knit stitch. #4 k3tog - Knit the next three stitches together.
#5
S, s, k1, psso - slip 1 stitch knitwise, slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 1 stitch, pass 2 slipped stitches over the knit stitch.
