Gardiner Yarn Works

Designed by Chrissy Gardiner for Sock Knitters Anonymous July 2010 Mystery Sock

What is it? You'll have to knit along to find out! It's got colorwork, is knit toe-up, and is named after progressive dinner parties, where guests go house to house and find new and different meals at each one...that's all I can tell you!
materials
(purple or brown). Color Note: Make sure that CC1, CC2, CC3 and CC4, wher laid out in that order, play well together. CC can have some variegation as long as MC is solid/semi-solid.You could also choose a single highly variegated yarn to encompass all CCs - just make sure it doesn't have color repeats that are too close to your MC.

Progressive Sock Party clue #l...
Toe
Using Judy's Magic CO (or your favorite toe-up CO) and CC1, CO 7 (9) sts on each of two circular ndls or dpns. 14 (18) sts.
Judy's Magic Cast-On
Hold one ndl horizontal and drape the yarn over it with the tail towards you and the yarn going to ball (working yarn) away from you (you will need a tail that is long enough to wrap around the ndl “x" times, where "x" is equal to the number of sts to be CO to that ndl, plus about $6^{\mathfrak{p}}$ to weave in). Give the yarn a half twist below the ndl so that the tail is now away from you and the working yarn is toward you (the reverse of a long-tail CO). Hold another ndl just below the ndl with the yarn loop already on it. The yarn loop will be the first st CO to the top ndl. Tent the yarn strands over the thumb and index finger of your left hand as if doing a long-tail cast-on. The tail will wrap around your index finger and the working yarn will rest on your thumb.

Cast the first st onto the bottom ndl by bringing both ndls up and around the yarn tail on your index finger. The yarn will wrap around the bottom of the empty bottom ndl from back to front as for a yarn over. Slip the yarn tail between the ndls to complete the loop around the bottom ndl.

There is now one st on each ndl. Be sure to pull these first sts nice and tight to avoid having loose sts at the edge of the CO row. Cast the next st onto the top ndl by bringing both ndls down and around the working yarn on your thumb. The yarn will wrap around the top of the top ndl from back to front. Slip the working yarn between the ndls to complete the loop around the top ndl.

Rep these last two movements, casting a st onto the bottom ndl, then the top ndl, until there are the desired number of sts on each ndl. Rotate ndls so that the yarn tail and working yarn are on your right. The working yarn should be coming off the bottom ndl and the yarn tail off the top ndl. You will beg working across the sts on the top ndl. Make sure to capture the yarn tail by placing it between the top ndl and the working yarn as you start knitting across the sts on the top ndl.

You can pull the yarn tail to firm up any looseness at the beg of this rnd. Note: When working Rnd 1, you will need to work the sts on the second (bottom) ndl tbl to avoid twistingthem. If using circulars, Ndl 1 will hold the instep sts and Ndl 2 the heel sts. If using dpns, divide sts evenly across four ndls with 4 (5) sts on Ndls 1 & 3 and 3 (4) sts on Ndls 3 & 4. Ndls 1 & 2 will hold the instep sts, Ndls $3\,\&$ 4 the heel sts. Note: The “instep sts" refer to the sts on the front of the leg and top of the foot. The “heel sts" refer to the sts on the back of the leg and bottom of the foot. Beg working in the rnd: Rnd 1: Knit. Rnd 2: K-fb, knit to last 2 instep sts, k-fb, k1; k-fb, knit to last 2 heel sts, k-fb, k1. 18 (22) sts. Work Rnd 2 only an additional 2x. 26 (30) sts, 13 (15) instep and 13 (15) heel. Then, rep Rnds 1-2 an additional 12 (13)x. 74 (82) sts, 37 (41) instep and 37 (41) heel. Knit one rnd even.
Foot
Join MC. Work Rnds 1-21 from Color Chart #1 on p. 4 across all sts, then rep Rnds 1-9. Pattern will be worked on both top and bottom of foot.
