Yarn: Richard Simon Helena Needles: 2.75 & 3.0mm Size: head circumference 49-51cm Notes: This is a perfect project to bust scraps of yarn in your stash. Sample gauge: 23 sts x 33 rows 10x10cm in St st For different yarn and gauge use the following calculations in percents. Calculate the number of sts required for your size and divide as foll: Total=48% (front)+28% (ear flaps -2)+24% (back) NOTE: number of sts for back must be odd and even for ear flaps. Directions: Ear flaps:

Using smaller needles and scrap yarn CO 4 sts (mandatory) leaving a tail 15-20cm long to knit I-cord ties afterwards. Work in garter st. Starting from Row 2 increase in every alt row working kfb each side until 16 sts. Cont straight through Row 21. Set aside. Work the second ear flap the same way.

Hat:

Using smaller needles CO 12 sts; knit 16 sts of first ear flap, turning it so that the prev row is purl row (to keep the garter st pattern correct); C0 54 sts; knit 16 sts of second ear flap, CO 13 sts - 111 sts. Join to knit in round.

Round 1:

(P1, K1) 7 times, working 2 sts of the first ear flap, P82 to keep the pattern correct, (K1, P1) 7 times, K1

Round 2:

:ing from Round 10 cont in St st until 5.5-6 cm = 21 rounds (meas from Round 10) Start decreasing from Round 23. Two options: · In every round k2tog so that the marked st is “on top" In every alt round s2kp - slip 2 as if to knit, k next st and pass slipped sts over the st just knit (marked st is the middle st) Cont decreasing until 75 sts rem (6 sts decreased on each side of central st - 12 rounds). Round 37 - mark central K sts again (for final decreases) and sts to be purled:

Crown:

Slip first 11 sts to right needle. Turn the hat inside out and bind off using three needles BO to last marked purl st, BUT work the first 3 sts tog so that the marked st remains "on top" on RS. Bind off all three sections until 3 purl sts rem, pass the yarn through and weave in the ends. Unravel scrap yarn, slip 4 sts on the needle and work an I-cord. Tip: if you are using scraps and afraid to run short of yarn, unwind the skein, fold in half and tie a loop. Wind the skein back and knit the first tie. As you come to the loop, fasten off and work the second loop so that both ties are long the same. Weave in all loose ends, wash and let dry. You can knit this hat for a girl and decorate it with a pompon. In such case omit decreases (starting from Round 23) and purl sts (starting from Round 37). Just keep working straight to crown. Work crown the same way (divide total number of sts in three parts and mark centre sts in the last RS round). Fold the corners as on photo, sew together and decorate with a pompon. This version is best knitted with lightweight yarns.
