Ribbed Rascal Hat
This hat uses a ribbed stitch to create a stretchy, comfortable beanie that wil grow with your child. Simple decreases make a tidy, smooth fiting crown and the pompom on top adds an element of fun that any child will love. Newborn to 3 month size instructions appear first in the pattern, followed in brackets with the instructions for 3-6 months and 6-12 months. What You Will Need: 50-90 yards of DK weight yarn (I used Debbie Bliss merino DK) One set of 3.75mm/ US size 5 double pointed needles (or whatever size you need to get a gauge of 22 stitches over 4 inches). One stitch marker and a tapestry needle to seam and weave in your ends. Pattern Instructions: CO 64 (72, 80) sts (make sure you don't cast on too tightly or you will lose the stretchiness in the brim of your hat). Join for working in the round, being careful not to twist your sts. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round. Round 1: [K2, P2] repeat to end of round. This creates the rib pattern for the beanie, continue repeating this round until your work measures 4 (5, 5.5) inches from CO edge. Decrease for crown (all sizes the same): Round 1: [k2, p2, k2, p2tog] repeat to end of round Round 2: [k2, p2, k2, p1] repeat to end of round Round 3: [k2, p2tog, k2, p1] repeat to end of round Round 4: [k2, p1] repeat to end of round Round 5: [k2, p1, k2tog, p1] repeat to end of round Round 6: [k2, p1, k1, p1] repeat to end of round

Round 7: [k2, p1, p2tog] repeat to end of round Round 8: [k2, p2] repeat to end of round Round 9: [k2, p2tog] repeat to end of round Round 10: [k2tog, p1] repeat to end of round Round 11: k2tog across the row. ( yarn, thread onto tapestry needle and pull through remaining stitches, pulltightly to close Weave in ends then sew on your pompom to finish. You can buy pompoms from most sewing or wool stores, but they are a lot of fun (and very easy) to make. If you want to try making your own there are some excellent online tutorials on youtube. Abbreviations used: CO-cast on, k-knit, k2tog-knit two together, p-purl, p2tog-purl two together, st-stitch/ stitches. This pattern is for personal use only.
