Arrowcowl by Madelinetosh: A Colorful Geometric Cowl Knitting Pattern Inspired by Native American Arrows

ARROWCOWL

Pattern illustration

BY :: MADELINETOSH A simple colorwork cowl with easy to remember pattern repeats inspired by the Native American arrows my grandfather collected on and around his South Texas farm. Knit in the round, this easy geometric design is great for a first colorwork project and holds enough interest for advanced knitters as well. The dense fabric the colorwork creates will make a warm cowl to wear around your neck for comfort or a pop of color underyourcoat.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

28" in circumference by 14" in height for short version 36" in circumference by 14 “ in height for longer version

NOTES

This cowl is worked in the round using a stranded colorwork technique. Be sure to carry floats loosely across sts. Note : For a simpler pattern work all seven repeats using Chart A only. All your arrowswill face oneway. Note :: To increase the height of your cowl, work additional pattern repeats, notingthatmorerepeatswill requiremoreyarn..

INSTRUCTIONS

With circulars in the length you need, cast on 120 (152) stitches. Place marker and join for knitting in the round, being careful not to twist work. Using color A, work 10 rounds of reverse stockinette stitch (purl all sts). Join color B and begin working from Chart A, reading all rows on chart from right to left and bottom to top. Find Chart A on page 4. Next, work one full repeat of Chart B. Find ChartBonpage 4. Continue to work Chart A followed by Chart B for a total of six motifs worked and, finish by working Chart A again; pattern is as follows: Chart A Chart B Chart A Chart B Chart A Chart B Chart A

EDGING

Change to color A and knit 2 rounds of stockinette stitch. Continue with color A and work 10 rounds of reverse stockinette stitch (purl all sts). Cast off all sts loosely.

FINISHING

Cut a 6" tail and weave in ends along the bottom and top edges of the cowl for a neat finish on both front and back of the finished fabric. Block lightly. Helpful Notes: each pattern repeat is roughly 1 %" in height (after blocking) the reverse stockinette stitch trims are 2" in height (after blocking) and when unrolled use the above measurements to add or delete pattern repeats for a customized cowl.
