Materials:
-1 ball worsted/Dk/8 ply orange acrylic yarn -1 ball sport/light DK/5 ply black yarn -scraps of white acrylic yarn (for tip of tail and inside of ear) -scraps of brown yarn (for nose) -3.75 mm crochet hook (US F) -US size 4/3.5 mm knitting needles (for scarf) -yarn needle -stitch markers or scraps of contrasting-colour yarn -material to stuff fox (quilt batting, cotton fiberfill, etc)
Notes:
-Gauge is not critical to this project. Finished fox will stand abut 4 inches/10 centimeters high. -This project is worked in spiral rounds without joining (except for Rnd 1). Use the yarn scraps or stitch markers tc mark the first sc of each round. -Beret is worked in turning rows so that it can go over the fox's ear. -Head and body are worked in one piece. I made the ears, muzzle, and tail are crocheted before the head and body and sewed them on before stuffing the fox, but you can sew them on after if you prefer.
Ears (make 2 of either version):
Version 1 (shown) : With orange, ch 2. Row 1: sc in 2nd chain from hook (1 sc). Row 2: inc (2 sc). Turn ear and sc 2 along edge, 2 sc in top (1st) sc of ear, 2 sc along next corner, fasten off. Using white, embroider inner ear using satin stitch. Sew ears onto head of fox. Version 2: With white, ch 2. Row 1- sc in 2nd chain from hook (1 sc). Row 2- inc (2 sc). Fasten off. Turn ear. Join orange and sc 2 along edge, 2 sc in top (lst) sc of ear, 2 sc along next corner, fasten off. Sew onto head of fox.
Muzzle:
With orange, ch 2. Rnd 1- 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join to first sc. Rnd 2- \*sc in 1 st, inc in next sc\*, rep from \* to \* around. Rnd 3- \*sc in 1 st, inc in next sc\*, rep from \* to \* around. Rnd 4- \*sc in 2 sts, inc in next sc\*, rep from \* to \* around. Rnd 5- Sc all around, join to first st. Fasten off. Using brown yarn, embroider a triangular nose, as shown in picture, using satin stitch. Sew muzzle onto face, stuffing firmly before closing. Use photos for as reference for placement.
Tail:
With white, ch 2. Rnd 1- 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join to first sc. Rnd 2- 3 sc in each sc. Rnd 3- \*sc in 1 st, inc in next sc\*, rep from \* to \* around to last sc; inc in last sc. Rnd 4- sc all around. Rnd 5- \*sc in 2 sts, dec over next 2 sc\*, rep from \* to \* around. Join orange. Rnd 6,7,8- sc all around. Rnd 9- dec over first 2 sc. Rnd 10- sc all around. Rnd 1l- sc all around. Rnd 12, 13, 14- dec over first 2 sc, inc in 3rd (middle) sc. Rnd 15- inc in first sc, dec in 4th sc. Fasten off.
Head:
With orange, ch 2. Rnd 1- 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join to first sc. Rnd 2- inc in every sc. Rnd 3- \*sc in 1 st, inc in next sc\*, rep from \* to \* around. Rnd 4- \*sc in 2 sts, inc in next sc\*, rep from \* to \* around. Rnd 5- sc all around. Rnd 6- \*sc in 3 sts, inc in next sc\*, rep from \* to \* around. Rnd 7- sc all around. Rnd 8- \*sc in 5 sts, inc in next sc\*, rep from \* to \* around. Rnd 9- sc all around. Rnd 10- \*sc in 3 sts, dec over next 2 sc\*, rep from \* to \* around. Rnd 1l- sc all around. Rnd 12- \*sc in 2 sts, dec over next 2 sc\*, rep from \* to \* around. Rnd 13- dec in every st. Do NOT fasten off.
Body:
Rnd 14- inc in every sc. Rnd 15- \*1 sc in first sc, inc in next sc\*, rep from \* to \* around. Rnd 16- sc all around. Rnd 17- \*sc in 3 sts, inc in next sc\*, rep from \* to \* around. Rnd 18- sc all around. Rnd 19- \*sc in 5 sts, inc in next sc\*, rep from \* to \* around. Rnd 20- sc all around. Rnd 21- \*sc in 6 sts, inc in next sc\*, rep from \* to \* around. Rnd 22- sc all around. Rnd 23- sc all around. Rnd 24- \*sc in 6 sts, dec over next 2 sc\*, rep from \* to \* around. Rnd 25- \*sc in 5 sts, dec over next 2 sc\*, rep from \* to \* around. Rnd 26- \*sc in 4 sts, dec over next 2 sc\*, rep from \* to \* around. Rnd 27- dec in every sc. Stuff firmly, then fasten off. weave in ends.
Scarf (optional):
Knit version (shown): CO 3 sts with black. Knit in garter stitch to about 6 in (15 cm) or desired length. Crochet version: With black, ch to 6 in (15 cm) or desired length of scarf. Slip st 4 rows. Fasten off If desired, attach fringe to scarf.
Beret (optional):
Row 3- \*inc in one sC, sc in 3 sts\*, rep from \* to \* around, ending with an inc, TURN. Row 4- \*inc in one sC, sc in 4 sts\*, rep from \* to \* around, ending with an inc, TURN. Row 5- \*inc in one sC, sc in 5 sts\*, rep from \* to \* around, ending with an inc, TURN. Continue in like manner until the slit is large enough to fit completely around fox's ear plus one row, each time adding one stitch to those between increases. This should take about 5 rows (\*inc, sc in 5 sts\*), depending on your gauge. DO NOT TURN on your last row! Instead, join the last sc of this row to the first sc. Then continue with the decrease rows IN THE ROUND as follows: dec Rnd 1: \*dec over 2 sts, sc in 2 sts\*, rep from \* to \* around.
Abbreviations:
