Materials: 1 skein each of MadelineTosh Vintage in Jade and Badlands (team up with a friend or two. You'll only need about a third of a yard of Badlands for the trunk) for the tree with the ribbed “trunk" band. or 1 skein of Madeline Tosh Vintage in Jade for the trunk-less, rolled brim tree. For the trim, ornaments, and star topper, I dug through my extensive basket of yarn scraps. Dig through yours and see what you can find! You will need a worsted weight or Aran weight for the star topper. Size 8 needles in 16" circs and DPN's. Crochet hook or darning needle for weaving in ends.

Knit an i-cord and sew in a spiral to your hat for garland. (shown on rolled brim hat) Satin stitch ornaments onto your tree with leftover bits of yarn from other projects. (shown on ribbed trunk hat) Hang miniature ornaments designed for tiny artificial trees onto your hat for extra silliness! (not shown, but wouldn't that be fun?!)

Rolled Brim Version Instructions: With Jade, cast on 81 stitches, pm, join to knit in the round (be careful not to twist!) Knit in stockinette stitch until hat measures 5" from rolled edge. Be sure you are measuring from the rolled brim rather than the cast on edge. If you measure from the cast on, the hat will be too short...and you'll look a little goofy!

From here on, work as for the Ribbed Trunk version.
