Foot length measures 4.5" from back of heel to toe when sock is laid out flat. To make: Using the german twist method (or your favorite cast-on method), CO 42 sts. Arrange sts among three needles - 14 sts each needle. Join for round and place marker. $^{\star}\mathsf{K}\mathsf{1}$ , sl 1 st as if to purl, repeat from \* to end. \*Sl 1 st as if to purl, P1, repeat from \* to end. Work $^{\star}\mathsf{K}\mathsf{1}$ , P1 ribbing for four rows. Begin working in pattern: Rows 1-3: $\star\mathsf{K}3$ , P3, repeat from \* to end. Rows 4-6: \*P3-, K3, repeat from \* to end. Work Rows 1-6 four times. Heel Flap: Row 1: Sl 1, K20 sts onto one needle. The remaining 21 sts will be held on two needles to be worked for the instep. Row 2: Sl 1, p20. Repeat rows 1 & 2 eight times. Turn heel: Sl 1, K10, ssk, K1, turn work. 7 sts remain unworked. Sl 1, P2, P2tog, P1, turn work. 7 sts remain unworked. Sl 1, K3, ssk, K1, turn work. 5 sts remain unworked. Sl 1, P4, P2tog, P1, turn work. 5 sts remain unworked. Sl 1, K5, ssk, K1, turn work. 3 sts remain unworked. Sl 1, P6, P2tog, P1, turn work. 3 sts remain unworked. Sl 1, K7, ssk, K1, turn work. 1 st remains unworked. Sl 1, P8, P2tog, P1, turn work. 1 st remains unworked. SI1, K9, SSK. Sl1, P9, P2tog. Heel is turned - 11 sts remain on needle. Using an empty needle, K across these 11 heel sts and use the same needle to pick up nine sts along the heel flap. This is needle #1. With needle #2, work next 21 sts of instep s,ts in pattern stitch onto one needle (note: pattern will now begin at row 4). With needle #3, pick up 9 sts along heel flap and then K across 6 heel sts. The round now begins here. Shape gussets: Row 1: Kto last 3 sts of needle #1, ssk, K1. Work instep sts on needle #2 in pattern. On needle #3, K1, K2tog, and K to end of the round. Row 2: K all sts on needles #1 & 3, work sts on needle #2 in pattern. Work rows 1 & 2 four times - 42 sts remain. Work Row 2 only 18 more times. Before beginning toe shaping, slide first stitch of needle #2 onto needle #1. There should now be 11 sts on needles #1 & 3, and 20 sts on needle #2. Toe shaping: Row 1: On needle #1, Kto last 3 sts, ssk, k1. On needle #2, k1, k2tog, kto last 3 sts, ssk, ki. On needle #3, k1, k2tog, k to end. Row 2: K all sts. Work Rows 1 & 2 seven times. Next rnd: \*K2tog, repeat from \* to end. Cut yarn and use tapestry needle to pul through remaining sts and weave in ends.
