Size US 9 (5.5 mm) 24" circular needle or size to obtain gauge Stitch marker 4 - %" buttons ABBREVIATIONS: CO - cast on PM - place marker st(s) - stitches K- knit P- purl GAUGE: 5 sts and 5 rows = one inch in Checkerboard pattern. FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: 7 %2" tall x 8 12" circumference, fits 13" calf.

LEFTBOOT TOPPER:

Bottom Rib:

With circular needle CO 40 sts. PM and join to knit in the round using Magic Loop technique. (For help on Magic Loop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mqlqRdJc68 ) Be careful not to twist the sts. Work in K1 P1 rib for 10 rounds.

Bind off row:

(Note: be careful to not work BO sts too tightly.) K1, P1, slip the 1st st on the right needle over the 2nd st.YO, work the next st as it appears, then slip both the 1st st AND the YO st on the right needle over the last worked sttoBO.

Begin Checkerboard Pattern:

Rounds 1-4: \*K2, P2\* to the end of the round. Rounds 5-8: \*P2, K2\* to the end of the round. Repeat Rounds 1-8 once more. (By working a YO every other st, this allows for a stretchy BO that won't be too tight on the leg.)

Top Cuff:

(NOTE: The remainder of the boot topper will be worked back and forth rather than in the round.) CO 8 sts at the beginning of the round using a stable CO

For the Right boot topper:

Work as for left boot topper until ready to begin the Top Cuff. Turn work around to begin working the sts in reverse order (the working yarn will be on the left needle now). Using the same cast on as for the Left boot topper, CO 8 sts. such as a Knitted CO or Cable CO, to create the cuff extension. Row 1: Work in K1, P1 rib on all sts. Row 1: Work in P1, K1 rib on all sts. Rows 2-12: Work all sts in 1x1 rib. Work BO row as for Left boot topper. Rows 2-12: Work all sts in 1x1 rib.

Attach buttons:

Overlap the cuff extension so that it extends past the cuff. Sew two buttons through both layers securing the extension to the cuff. Repeat for the other boot topper.
